Rocket mouse is a really great simple experiment for junior classes. I like how you introduced the materials first without an initial prompt, keeping them curious and thinking!
I love how you describe this lesson Jenny. It is so important to encourage children’s scientific skills and allow them to feel like little scientists, figuring things out on their own.
Jane- it sounds like your school does an amazing effort for Space Week and we love to hear that. I’m glad to hear you were one of the lucky schools to get a visit from Steve, he is so good at engaging the children with his stories from the International Space Station. I especially like how you do a school wide rocket launch and open day. Great work!
Shadows are very fun to explore and investigate with children and there are so many lovely ways to play with them. You could extend on your indoor lamp activity to explain the phases of the Moon and day/night on Earth. Nice work!
Hi Helen, this is a lovely lesson for teaching collaborative research skills and independent research. I like how you incorporate art into how they present their findings.
Designing a planet can be a great mix of a creative and scientific lesson, this is very nice! Would they make 2D or 3D models or their planets?
Hannah – The balloon rocket is always great fun, and using the string to control the balloon’s path is great for reducing the chaos that comes with creating rockets in a classroom. Nice job on highlighting the cross-curricular links!
Grainne, I like your shadow game idea. That’s a nice way to get the children engaged. This lesson would be a great opportunity learn day/night as well.
Nice lesson Grainne – this is a great experiment and so simple. I find that children love planting things and watching them grow (even if they can be a bit impatient about the growing process)
Great activity Catherine. What way would you have them design their planets – a 3D model or a drawing/diagram?
Love this lesson Amanda, especially the news report segment. For making planets at the Blackrock Castle we often use Crayola Model Magic, it’s great because you can mix colours easily and its not sticky or messy!
Aine this is a very nice lesson – so simple but great for discussion. You could extend this by discussing weather/climate and how to dress appropriately.
Aine I love the idea of viewing the constellation from various viewpoints too. Great way to give the children a better perspective and understanding of our Universe and the stars.
I love the astronomy photos as whiteboard background idea – great way to keep them thinking about STEM in a passive manner!
Eleanor – it’s great to see you report back on this lesson. Rockets are always a very engaging activity and you sound like you did a brilliant job at inspiring their STEM curiosity.
