1st class Lesson: Our local area and the weather

      Learning outcomes:
The children will be able to
-name places near home and school (park, roads, shops etc.)
      -talk about todays weather
-understand that AI is a like a computer brain that helps us learn about the world

      Resources:
      -Whiteboard and markers
      -Tablet
-AI weather too (eg. Chat GPT)
-Printed weather pictures (sun, cloud, rain)
      -Paper and colours

Introduction: Talk about the local area. What places are near home or school. Look at some pictures of these places.

-Google earth: The children will be told that google earth uses computer brains called AI to look at the earth from above. They will then use google earth to ‘fly’ to our school. They will be asked to look out for roads, shops, parks etc. and see if they can find anything else by zooming in and out and moving in different directions.

-Weather exploration: The children will be told that weather computers take in lots of information from satellites and sensors and predict what future weather may be. Together they will look out the window and discuss todays weather. They will then have the opportunity to ask chat GPT what is the current weather in the area. Following this they can ask what the weather might be tomorrow, will it rain on Sunday etc.

      Activity:
The children will draw their locality and add weather symbols.
In pairs the children take turns in asking chat GPT what the weather is while the other plays the role of AI and answers.

Conclusion: Recap on what was learned today. What places are near by?
What weather do we have today? How did the computer help us with our learning?

For this lesson I plan on using google earth to show the children their school and places nearby. Chat GPT will be used to check weather facts while a chatbot will be used for present and future weather. I would also use magic school to generate a story for the lesson.

I feel that the above lesson will be very enjoyable for the children. They are at a very curious age and im sure many of them may not have seen or used google earth before. It will also be interesting to see if many are familiar with chatbots. I know that ALEXA is quite common in many households so the children may already know how to interact with them.

I absolutely love this lesson. I think the children will have great fun with the modified version of the three little pigs story. Definitely something id like to use in the coming year.

I didnt look into Diffit in too much detail so I  wasn’t aware that it can create a more simplified version of a text. I must look at it again as I feel that this will be an excellent resource.

One of the first AI applications that I will introduce to my class this year is Khan academy Kids. It is completely new to me so I downloaded the app and had a look at some of what it has to offer. I love that it has literacy, numeracy and social emotional learning activities and that they are tailored to the individual child by analysing their responses.
When I do introduce it I will explain to the children that it is a app that is learning what they already know my monitoring their answers and the more it knows the more it will be able to create different tasks to teach and challenge them.
I would hope to use it in the beginning of the year for some phonological awareness. I feel that it will be a good place to start for some revision as it will make the phonics easier or more difficult for the individual child.
I have seen some lovely activities involving patterns, sorting and problem sorting so I will definitely be also using it for maths.

I completely agree that walk tall is definitely outdated. Its good to know that Magic school will be an excellent resource for topics and stories going forward.

I will be teaching first class this year and many of the tools we looked at in module 3 will be very beneficial. Youtube is a very common tool that I have always used. It is fantastic for videos no matter what the topic is that you are covering.
                    Example 1:
                    Lesson: The water cycle.
The children will watch a fun and animated video of the water cycle on YouTube geared specifically at their age group.
Magic School can be used to generate appropriate questions, a quiz and a drawing activity to follow the video.
The magic school drawing activity and pupil responses can be used as assessment.
                    Example 2:
                    Lesson: Storytelling
The children will watch the animated story of The Gruffalo on YouTube. Followed by discussion.
Chat GPT can be used to generate some comprehension questions, age appropriate sentence starters and maybe a creative writing piece based on the story.
Work can be assessed by looking at the children’s sentence structure, spelling and use of vocabulary.

The use of AI programs such as those discussed in the last few modules (ChatGPT, Diffit, MagicSchool, YouTube, Copilot etc.) give the teacher the opportunity to enhance teaching, learning and assessment in the classroom. Going forward in the next school year I hope to use diffit that will adjust content for the abilities of different pupils. Chat GPT will be an excellent resource for word problems, sentence starters and comprehension questions and youtube as I mentioned already has always been top of my resource bank.

We have clearly seen from the video at the end of module 2 how much AI can actually do for teachers. Would I like this level in my classroom? I’m afraid not. The wearing of a headband that can analyse a persons brain activity throughout a school day and then report back to parents is an added pressure for teachers. The parent might question why wasn’t my child concentrating? Was your lesson not interesting enough? Did you not correct them and get them to concentrate? Its also quite unfair on the child. Nobody can be expected to give 100% attention all the time.
While I feel that this level of AI is a step too far the benefits at the level we are familiar with now are huge. Being able to tailor content to the needs of individual children and allow them to work at their own pace is fantastic. Automated grading systems and the ability to analyse student performance takes of a lot of pressure off the teacher and frees up valuable time.
It is definitely the way forward but like everything will meet its challenges. As a teacher I feel that there will definitely be ongoing training needed. This course is a bice stepping stone but AI is progressing fast so it will need to be ongoing to keep up. There is also the fear of over reliance. Will we get lazy and rely too much on AI?

I also found the video of AI being used in china concerning. I can’t imagine the pressure of having data from how much the child is paying attention going home everyday.

AI is a very modern and effective way to assist with teaching, learning and assessment in the classroom.

It can assist with differentiation by analysing the needs of specific children just by simply inputting their data and asking it to tailor the learning outcomes.

Our school has several children with English as a second language. Some with no English at all. AI offers various translation tools allowing for more inclusivity of these children. This would have been a huge problem for our school in the past but is no longer the case.

AI is already having a huge impact on planning and assessment in the classroom. It can create a lesson, worksheet or a test in a matter of seconds. It can simplify a lesson that may have been too difficult on the day or equally generate something more challenging. A quiz can be created to assess learning in no time which is definitely something I look forward to using.

The most important thing about the use of AI going forward, for me anyway, Is that it frees up the teacher from some very time consuming administrative tasks allowing them more time to work closely with the children.

I too feel like my teaching will change in September. I’m quite new to AI and like you found myself a little afraid of it. I recently taught 4th class for the first time having worked with infants for several years and they introduced me to a lot of new resources including quiz creators. Yippity is another new one for me and I look forward to using it.

I would use rockets and aliens as part of an Aistear theme in the infant classroom.

At the construction station the children will be instructed to create a rocket using large polydrons.

The play dough station will give the children the opportunity to create their own alien characters. They will already be familiar with the story ‘the smeds and the smoos’ and will be asked to model them based on the story.

Role play will allow the children to get into role as astronauts that go into space and encounter aliens.

At the junk art station the children can make their own rocket or alien space ship.

A games station can include a variety of number games that involve counting forwards and backwards 1-10. They can sequence number cards 1-10 and practice counting forwards and backwards. They can also practice writing their numbers at a writing station.

These are just some of the things that can be used for Aistear in the infant classroom. It’s a lovely theme and I look forward to using it.
