      Module 1

      Incorporating aquaculture and the idea of social license into classroom learning offers a meaningful way to enhance students’ awareness of sustainability, environmental stewardship, and the influence of community opinions on industry practices. Utilizing digital resources—such as simulations, interactive maps, multimedia content, and role-play scenarios—encourages students to actively engage with the material in a dynamic and thought-provoking manner.       Studying aquaculture allows students to examine how seafood production impacts marine environments and coastal communities. Introducing the notion of social license helps students reflect on how industries gain public approval and the significance of ethical decision-making in maintaining that support.         For a science/history project with Third Class, we explored the life of Robert Boyle, whose family had strong ties to County Westmeath. Though born in Lismore, his family owned estates in Westmeath, and he’s known as one of the “fathers of modern chemistry.” The children loved learning about Boyle’s Law and how he experimented with air pressure. We did a simple balloon experiment to show how air takes up space. Pupils created fact files, posters, and mini-presentations. It was a great way to link science with local history, making the learning meaningful and engaging for this age group.

          I love the idea of children designing their own structure too. Previously, I encouraged the children to design their own structures inspired by Clonmacnoise, using recycled materials and natural elements. This hands-on activity sparked creativity, introduced basic engineering concepts, and deepened their appreciation for local heritage through imaginative, child-led exploration.

            To explore our local natural and scientific heritage, I would base a creative project around Clonmacnoise   as it is close to my school), a historic monastic site on the River Shannon. This cross-curricular project would engage Third Class pupils through art, music, drama, and creative writing, while deepening their understanding of history, nature, and place.

            We would begin by learning about the site’s origins, its stonework, and its riverside setting through images, maps, and discussion. Pupils would then create artwork inspired by the high crosses and round towers, using clay, charcoal, or collage. In music, we’d recreate a sense of monastic life by composing a simple chant or soundscape using natural and classroom instruments.

            Through drama, pupils would explore daily life in early Christian Ireland by role-playing monks, stone carvers, or river animals, developing short scenes or tableaux. For creative writing, pupils would imagine they were living at Clonmacnoise 1,000 years ago—writing diary entries, letters, or poems capturing what they see and feel.

            The project would culminate in a “Clonmacnoise Heritage Day,” where pupils showcase their work through performance and exhibition. This approach not only nurtures creativity and collaboration, but also builds a lasting connection to our local environment and heritage.

              Oh yes using film is very effective and of course yes it is important to assess the children’s learning- two stars and a wish is an excellent way to do this.

                I love your ideas Mary as it definitely encourages creativity and problem-solving among the pupils.  Given the children various roles is also an excellent idea as it encourages participation from all pupils.

                  I am very familiar with Birr Castle as I live in close proximity to it, and the suspension bridge in the Demesne offers a fantastic real-life structure to inspire a class or whole school bridge-building challenge. For Third Class, I would begin with a visit to the bridge or use photos and videos to explore its design, purpose, and structure. We would discuss how it stays up, the materials used, and the forces acting on it.

                  Back in the classroom, students would work in small groups to plan, design, and build their own model bridges using materials like lollipop sticks, string, paper, and recycled cardboard. The challenge could be to build a bridge that spans 30 cm and can support a small weight (like a toy car or block).

                  Mathematical thinking would be integrated throughout the project. Students would measure materials using rulers and tape measures (length, width), record data in tables (weights, spans), and use basic multiplication and addition to calculate total materials used. They could also explore symmetry and shape when designing their bridge.

                  This project combines hands-on STEM learning with real-life application, while supporting Maths skills development in a fun and engaging way, encouraging collaboration, problem-solving, and creativity.

                      I must look into registering our school garden on the All Ireland Pollinator as we have a fantastic garden with a pond and pupils are becoming more aware of the importance of Biodiversity in our world.

                        We are fortunate to have a wonderful garden and outdoor learning space .To conduct a seasonal biodiversity project across the school year, I would use resources such as the Exploring Biodiversity toolkit and SESE Primary Science Curriculum supports, along with nature guides and digital tools like the Biodiversity Ireland app as well as all the fantastic resources referred to in this module. The project would involve students observing and recording seasonal changes in plants, insects, and animals in our school grounds or a local green space.

                        We would go outdoors at least once a month to observe changes, using recording sheets tailored for each season. These would include tick-boxes for common species, space for sketches, and weather notes. Students would use magnifying glasses, bug viewers, and tablets to take photos or make notes. I’d also introduce a classroom nature table to bring the outdoors in.

                        This project naturally integrates with subjects like English (nature journals and report writing), Maths (graphing sightings, measuring plant growth), and Visual Arts (drawing and painting from nature). In SPHE, we’d discuss caring for our environment, while Geography would support learning about habitats and seasonal cycles. Technology would be integrated through digital presentations and online species identification. Overall, this project encourages curiosity, observation, and a deep connection to the local environment, while linking meaningfully to a wide range of curriculum areas.

                            Yes I agree. I love the hands on idea too of using twigs and stones as it makes mapping very practical for the infants. I am getting some great ideas here.

                              For younger classes, a lesson on map making would begin with exploring what maps are and why we use them. I would start with a discussion using a simple storybook map to introduce key features like symbols, a legend, compass directions, and scale. To make it engaging, students could create a hand-drawn map of their classroom or school, adding their own symbols and landmarks.

                              To incorporate online tools, I would use Google Maps in a guided session on the interactive whiteboard. We could explore our local area, zoom in on familiar places, and compare satellite and map views. This helps students connect real-world locations to the concept of mapping. For a more data-based exploration, Geohive could be used at a very basic level to show population maps or colour-coded regions, allowing students to see how maps can represent information.

                              Students could then use a simple digital tool like Google My Maps (with teacher guidance) to drop pins on locations they know—home, school, playgrounds—and add notes or pictures. This digital mapping builds their spatial awareness and links to digital literacy. Overall, combining hands-on drawing with interactive technology makes map making meaningful, age-appropriate, and fun for younger learners.
