The video HOME contains powerful imagery and would be very useful in exploring our planet from the classroom. It is an eye opener in terms of the landscapes and regions shown along with all the different ecosystems. Watching clips from here would be fantastic for sparking pupils interest not only in space exploration but also cultural exploration and environmental awareness. At my classroom level I would certainly plan clear learning goals and choose the appropriate clips from the movie to engage in discussion and activities before, during and after watching. As part of researching climate change and predicting future patterns, there is great opportunity for public speaking and debate. Using Greta Thunberg’s video would be a resource that I would use to link these curricular areas. The tool for calculating the carbon footprint would be challenging for my class to complete but I would certainly use it where I facilitated completing the questions on the IWB and we substituted answers to show the positive impact our personal choices could make to help reduce the carbon footprint.
Great idea Tara, these are so many opportunities to for the children to engage their minds here and all in a fun and collaborative way. The resources available are great and even better in that they can be displayed on the IWB to assist with teaching and learning.
There are so many opportunities as one explores this topic in more detail. The Paxi video is a fantastic resource that I feel would definitely engage the pupils. The ESA Earth under the lid experiments would further support this and are very manageable experiments to carry out. The Tealtool is a great resource that the children could explore with on the IPADS and help them in predicting future temperatures and precipitation in varying countries around the world. The video on how to use it would be required for my class to properly engage with it. It would be useful to explore countries in the different climate areas to see what variances are expected. The David Attenborough video on Save our Planet reinforces the message that we as humans need to make changes and the children can discuss next steps and reflect from all their learnings. There are many opportunities to link with other subjects, vocabulary games, report writing, drama and art within the class as well as whole school collaboration. These are great resources and activities to incorporate the 4 Cs of critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication.
The bulletin board is a good choice or publishing update in school newsletter or social media regularly to share patterns observed or anything very unusual for the time of year.
I think that is a great idea about the bulletin board or publishing update in school newsletter or social media regularly to share patterns observed or anything very unusual for the time of year.
Having read and reflected on the article unravelling STEM, I would be confident in saying that activities I have carried in the classroom over the years have incorporated all elements of STEM and from courses I have attended the message has been to facilitate a pupil led inquiry activity. Very often the engineering aspect comes to fruition in the reflection and debrief conversations after the activities. The ESA resources are a great tool to support the teaching and learning of weather and climate. I would probably use them a supporting resource which I would adapt for my audience. I love the is it weather or climate activity as there is great scope here for discussion to facilitate understanding. There is great opportunity to link this topic with so many others outside of the SESE subjects including Gaeilge, Maths and Music. Making their own weather station is a wonderful project and luckily there is garden area to do so. Creating and making rain gauges, anemometers, measuring, comparing etc as well as the opportunity to share their findings on a school notice board would be vey enjoyable for the class. The weather detectives measuring air temperature would require some consistency however there is great opportunity for class discussions, decision making, taking ownership not to mention collecting, analysing and reporting data.
