I like your whole school approach and practical ways for the school community to be invovled. Even the caretaker. this has provided me with the ideas to bring back to my school for this year.

In regard to pollinators, I would sign our school up to register our garden with All-Ireland Pollinator Plan and start recording our actions for pollinators.

As a school leader, after registering I will look at priority areas for our school new term for AP posts this coming year- becoming a green school is an initiative I would like to embark on. we have a lovely area that needs to be planned as we ar a new school with building works just finished this past Spring. This area would provide a blueprint to use for the project.

– by planting wild flowers,

– use of trees to support pollinators such as bees and support the local birds in the area,

– I would ask the team to view ways in which as a school community we can use this space for group and individual work projects

– CPD courses for teachers

– interest and collective knowledge of all staff, parent and external professional bodies

i really relate to your thinking, i had forgotten about the resources and websites such as curious minds. the learning from this module has provided me with a refresher and the time to explore how I can incorrporate  more STEM into my lesson planning going forward

after reading the article : unreaveling stem (Lisotn, 2018), the artile talks bout how STEM is not islolated subjects but interconnected. it aims to support problem solving and creativity through a community of enquiry and provide stratgies such as open ended approach to solving problems.

As a special school, strategies such as hands on learning and exploring with the use of visual supports and differentiated adapted lessons that aims to meet the children where they are at, through gorup projects i is very supportive of the inquiry based learning. through monthly themes and lessons and links to curricular subjects aims to provide that for our children. for example. one monthly theme I did was colour. we completed a group project exploring colour through a sensory experience. for expample blue was cold and red was hot and the colours inbetween. as a group we decided the cold sensory objects such as water, red hot such as volcano eruptions to red hot chillies and peppers, bubble painting etc exploring through science, technology and sensory tools to explore through a stem lens.

As a special school, mapping with the children would be a lovely activity that would support being in the community and purposeful. I would suggest teachers to complete a prior acivity in the school and this would be a follow up lesson. the children would walk to the local park/pond beside Naas hospital. use google maps to support location, use the ipad to take photos of the pond from various angles. when back at the school, teachers would print out the pictures and perhaps a more overall view on the IWB. lay out various tools for children to choose such as natural objects of sticks, twigs, stones etc and for some children they enjoy lego so this can be an option also. bloue crepe paper etc. the children can be invovled to discuss other options. then the children set about creating their own designs. As we are a moderate to severe learning school profile support and differentiation will be provided such as examples visual supports. for some childlren then they can showcase their work to the class and also use digital technologies to share their work to parents and wider shcool.
