This sounds wonderful. This might be useful for your solar system section! I often find Venus to be a good comparison for planets that are habitable as it is often referred to as earths evil twin, as it is a similar size to Earth but the hottest planet in our solar system where it can reach temperatures of 467 degrees Celsius.

This is a lovely lesson, Google earth pro’s moon option might be useful here! It is also an opportunity to introduce tidal locking – draw a face on the moon (ball) and the face is always looking at the sun for example. Or solar eclipses – position the moon as best you can infront of the beams from the torch as to block it ! There will be a solar eclipse in August, so most children will be familiar with the concept see here for more information and events!

This is a fantastic lesson! Establishing gravity as a force is a really important one. Saturn’s moon’s are some of the most exciting things in our solar system, from fascinating bodies like Enceladus or the fact that we keep finding more! We are on about 285 moons in total according to the IAU as of March this year.

This is wonderful! What would be a cool addition to this is through using a hoola hoop or otherwise include another child as the moon – they would have to face the sun at all times even when moving around – this is tidal locking! By September most children (hopefully if its not cloudy on august 12th) will have experienced a solar eclipse this would also be easily explained from this lesson. I find using chalk on the ground for orbits helps with an activity like this one.

This sounds fab. I enjoy the class discussion at the end! Something quite simple that you could do that was actually a big deal back in the day is part of Archimedes principle – if you put an object in a container that’s almost full, what spills out will be the same volume!
