Hi Ann Marie,
Thank you for your reflection!
It is great to hear that you see the value in teaching pupils about aquaculture. We agree that it is an important topic, especially for students living on an island. We are delighted that the resources will help pupils learn more about food production, sustainability and the role aquaculture plays in our communities. We hope the lessons and activities help make learning about aquaculture fun and engaging!

Thank you for your piece!
I really liked how you highlighted the importance of making STEM learning accessible for all pupils, especially through the use of visual and engaging resources. It is great to see how you have connected the ARC lessons to your fishing village and the experiences your pupils already have at home. Using local industries and real life examples is a fantastic way to make learning meaningful and help children develop pride in their community.

Thank you for your reflective piece.
I enjoyed reading your reflection on how the ARC resources could be used to bring STEM learning to life, especially for pupils who may not have much experience with aquaculture or marine topics.
I like how you highlighted the use of real world examples and inquiry based learning to help children build skills such as teamwork and critical thinking. Your point about using ARC resources as part of the SSE process is also a great example of how schools can work together to strengthen STEM learning across different classes. Linking topics like aquaculture, biodiversity and sustainability to everyday life can help pupils see the relevance of STEM beyond the classroom.

Hi Áine,
Thank you for sharing your piece! I have visited the areas you mentioned many times and marine activity is totally intertwined into the community there.
Your post highlights the importance of making learning accessible and meaningful by connecting classroom topics with the experiences pupils encounter in their own community. I really liked how you adapted the use of the ARC resources to meet the needs of your ASD class, showing how visual, interactive and flexible tools can support different learning styles. Linking aquaculture and social license to the local fishing industry also provides pupils with a valuable understanding of the role these industries play in their community.

Hi Kate,
Thank you for your reflective piece!
Your forum post highlights the value of using visual and interactive resources, such as the photos, videos and remote classroom, to introduce aquaculture concepts in an engaging way. I particularly liked your point about the importance of linking learning to your coastal location, as pupils can make meaningful connections between the classroom and the marine environment around them.
Exploring aquaculture and social licence with 5th and 6th class pupils can encourage them to consider different perspectives, sustainability and the relationship between communities and marine industries.

Hi Colette,
Thank you for your response to module 4!
I really enjoyed reading your reflection on how your own experiences with seafood have influenced your understanding of the topic and how memorable those hands-on learning experiences can be for children. Your example of bringing pupils to explore the coast and taste locally sourced seafood shows the value of connecting classroom learning with the local environment and community.
I also like how you have adapted this topic for Junior Infants through Aistear, stories and creative activities, making it accessible and engaging for the younger students.

Hi Ann,
Thank you for your response to module 4!
It is great to see how you have connected the nutritional benefits of seafood with your local community and the oyster farming industry near your school. I particularly liked your ideas of involving local producers and using hands-on activities to help pupils understand where their food comes from and the importance of healthy choices.
Linking seafood education across Science, Geography and SPHE provides excellent opportunities for pupils to explore nutrition, sustainability and the role of local industries. Bringing real life examples into the classroom can help make learning more meaningful and encourage children to appreciate the resources available within their own community.

Hi Erin,
Thank you for your response to module 5!
It is great to see how you have highlighted that sustainability is just as important in inland communities as it is along the coast, using local examples from County Laois to make learning meaningful. I particularly liked your ideas of investigating local biodiversity and carrying out litter surveys, as these are practical activities that encourage pupils to become active participants in caring for their environment.
Your focus on helping children connect sustainability to their own community will make the learning more relevant and memorable.

Hi Alan,
Thank you for your response to module 5!
I really enjoyed reading how you have connected sustainability to your local area, particularly through the River Dargle and bray harbour and the opportunities they provide for meaningful, inquiry based learning. Your idea of involving the Green Schools Student Committee in investigating local environmental issues and engaging with the wider community is an excellent way to give pupils ownership of their learning.
I also liked your emphasis on helping children understand why sustainable actions matter, as this is the key to developing lifelong environmentally responsible behaviours. Using familiar local examples makes sustainability more relevant for pupils and encourages them to see the positive impact they can have within their own community.

Hi Eve,
Thank you for your response to module 5!
It is clear that sustainability is already a strong focus within your school, and I particularly liked how you are building on this through your Green Schools initiatives and plans for the Marine Environment flag. Your idea of involving pupils in monitoring energy use and growing their own vegetables provides meaningful, hands-on learning that helps children see the impact of their actions. Living so close to Dublin Bay and Bull Island gives your pupils a fantastic opportunity to explore marine biodiversity and conservation in a real world context.

Hi Kevin,
Thank you for your response to module 2!
Connecting the students to aquaculture related activities such as the oyster farms along Waterford’s coastlines is a great way to bring the topics to life. Inviting a guest speaker if possible or completing projects on the oysters may be a great way to introduce the topic to the class.
Waterford has a thriving marine community, spread across fishing, aquaculture and ecotourism.

Hi Erin,
Thank you for your response to module 2!
It’s great to see how this module helped deepen your understanding of why aquaculture is located in particular coastal areas and the important role the natural environment plays in supporting the industry. I liked how you recognised the wider socioeconomic benefits of aquaculture, including its contribution to employment and sustainable coastal communities.
