The 21st century skill that I have chosen is collaboration and teamwork. The task that would be assigned to 4th 5th and 6th Class would be to create a team obstacle course for all classes to complete on our Annual School Sports Day. This is something that we do each year in our school as we encourage the senior classes to contribute to the running of our Sports Day and to help and encourage the younger children. We encourage family and friends to come to our Sports Day so the extra help is always well received and appreciated. Firstly, the pupils would generate an Excel Sheet of the equipment we have in the PE resource room. Based on the equipment in the Excel Sheet, the pupils would create a Microsoft Form to get feedback from other classes to see what activities they might like to be included in the obstacle course. This works well as we can make it fun and appealing to the children. The children will then decide what activities will be part of the obstacle course. Then the pupils would make up the obstacle course and show and explain it to the other classes. This could be presented to the other classes in the form of a Powerpoint Presentation, including photos and explanations, with the pupils presenting the Powerpoint in groups. The pupils would then collaborate with the other class teachers to decide on times and days to practice the obstacle course before Sports Day. I feel that this module of the course will be extremely influential in my future teaching, as I will be able to refer back to the 21st century skills and their associated rubrics as I plan future lessons. The concept of lifelong learning certainly applies to us all.
August 4, 2022 at 12:06 pm in reply to: Module 4 – Digital Learning and School Self Evaluation #60494Digital Technology gives many resources that teachers can use in and out of the classroom to improve and enrich student learning. Digital Technology can support student collaboration in creating new knowledge, reflecting on what they are learning, or working together to achieve a deeper understanding of course material. This is very relevant to children now especially with their increased activity on Tablets and other gadgets outside of school. I am moving away from traditional teaching and toward technology. I now use a range of technology that I never used previously e.g., Seesaw, Loom and Zoom. The use of technology for AFL and Assessment of Learning is beneficial and effective. It is important teachers are well trained in using a range of technology before implementing it into the classroom. School self-evaluation empowers a school community to identify and affirm good practice, and to identify and act on areas that merit improvement. School self-evaluation is primarily about schools taking ownership of their own development and improvement. I can apply School self-evaluation to my teaching by reflecting on my day-to-day practice and the learning that the pupils achieve. This can be a talking point during Croke Park and to really ensure colleagues are learning from each other.Digital technology can enrich the learning experience for all our children and young people. We know from consultation activity that our learners already have strong exposure to digital technology and that they would support its increased use as part of their own education.
August 3, 2022 at 11:35 pm in reply to: Module 1 – Introduction to Microsoft 365 for Education #59955I have never heard of Sway or used it until I started module 1. I look forward to using Sway in the classroom. It is very interesting how you can turn a blank page into an interactive and visually enjoyable information page. There are plenty of options and templates to use and make an exciting lesson. I have used forms in the past, for Assessment of Learning and found it very beneficial. Children are very excited when they see an interactive quiz or form. This is very useful for assessment and finding out exactly what the children know and need more work on.
Sway looks very interesting and will be a great tool to invigorate PowerPoints and make them more accessible and interesting. It would also be a great tool for pupils to use. This will really showcase their learning on different areas of the curriculum. The Microsoft learn educator center is a great tool for CPD and to keep on top of new developments and how to use technology to greater advantage in the classroom. As we have seen from covid it really is necessary to constantly be up skilling in terms of our own ICT skills.
August 3, 2022 at 11:25 pm in reply to: Module 2 – Office 365 Tools to help support Collaboration #59921In my school, Microsoft teams were implemented into our school two years ago with the Pandemic. I have used Microsoft teams to communicate with teachers and SLT members. SLT delivered training remotely during covid restrictions. During remote learning, I recorded a lot of my PowerPoints using Loom. The recording feature on PPT is excellent I was able to correct any mistakes and it made editing a lot easier. I was then able to upload my PowerPoint recordings which allowed me to create an interactive lesson. Having recorded PowerPoints allowed the children to work at their own pace and they could back and listen to previous slides.
Teams enhances productivity as the calendar organisation, conversations, collaborations, online meetings, file sharing, task management, and chats are all accessible in the one app which can be accessed on a phone or device. I really found this to be a game changer in schools with large number of staff. Definitely more suited to staff collaboration and interactions. For children I think Teams could be confusing as there is a lot of literacy and information attached. I feel this is something can could be taught in a step by step process and help the children with navigating the simple basic steps.
I will be suggesting OneNote to my colleagues in school on our return in September. OneNote can be used to collect and organise a wide range of content, whereas your paper notebook can only cope with text, drawings, and perhaps glued-in pictures. I enjoyed OneNote because it allows you to clip content from websites and link to videos. This is very modern and a useful feature when creating resources for teaching in the classroom. Another useful feature of OneNote is the ability to share notes or notebooks with other people. This could be great for collecting material for a group project. I feel this would really push children in the older classes and give them the chance to really optimize their learning collaboratively. I also agree that OneNote would work well in upper primary and could be used for a range of activities. Differentiation can be demonstrated and used effectively. I am excited to use OneNote in my class!
