        1. Detail how light pollution is impacting your local area and how you would engage your learners to explore this.

To begin this investigation, I will show two photos: one of a star-filled dark sky (like Kerry), and one of a city sky (orange glow, only a few stars) and ask the question ‘Why do you think there are fewer stars here?
I would highlight the impact on astronomy, how light pollution makes it harder to observe planets, stars and meteors. The impact on wildlife, creating confusion for nocturnal animals and for people; it is harder to enjoy a starry night and the energy waste from excess light. We would then take part in a local investigation by doing a street survey. We would take a short local walk where students take note of how many streetlights, shop lights or security lights they spot. This can be done in pairs or in small groups, marking their findings on a map or by taking photos using the class ipads. We would then link this with our Art lesson by creating posters showing ‘ Our sky Now’ vs ‘Our sky Without Light Pollution.
