2. Construct a sundial in the immediate area or plan for your school grounds to see where a sundial could be placed.
I would begin by exploring the topic of time/ sundials and posing the question of ‘ where do you think would be a good spot for a sundial in our new school grounds?’ Our campus will have a new build this September and so making use of our new space will be of great interest to the children. I would encourage them to look around and spot any areas of shade from trees or the new build, what ground gets the sunlight most throughout the day. I would also encourage them to look at a suitable area for a sundial, flat ground, somewhere that is not in the traffic of school etc… I would split the class into groups for this investigation, possibly with a map of the school grounds and with the class ipads so they could photograph their findings and report back to the class afterwards. They would need to do this over the course of the school day. They could present their findings to the class as a group and put forward their ideas for where they think the sundial should go. We would then have a class vote to pick the ideal spot for the sundial.
