The strategic location of aquaculture farms along Ireland’s coastline, from Donegal along the western sea board, represents a vital intersection of geography, economy, and community survival. I live in peripheral and rural county and aquaculture thrives here. Because these regions are geographically remote, we suffer from poor land infrastructure, limited connectivity, and a lack of traditional manufacturing jobs.
Socio-economically, aquaculture acts as a baseline lifeline for the area I live in. While global urbanization drives younger people away from coastal towns, marine farming provides localized, stable employment that spans multiple skill levels.
Integrating this topic into the primary curriculum gives pupils immediate, real-world context for how human activity adapts to the natural environment. However, in the classroom we must address the balance that has be achieved with tourism, traditional fisheries, sea swimming alongside aquaculture farms.

I absolutely love this especially turning coastal locations into “living classrooms.” It is so important that children learn from their coastal surroundings. When we go “away” on holidays we are all great to explore other countries coastlines and learn but we need to teach the children of Irish about our coast and country

It is very important as you say to maintain a healthy balance between tourisim , fisheries , and aquaculture farms. They must feed off each other in order for all parties to succeed and thrive .

I agree Diarmaid. I am lucky enough to teach on the coast and we treat to treat our coastlines as real life classrooms. There is so much opportunity for hands on learning from visiting the coastline, finding samples of mussels, barnacles, periwinkles and clams, receiving visits from local fishermen and entrepreneurs, tasting local fish and shellfish. We need to give the children first hand experience in order to make the biggest impact.

From your post I read that many of the aquaculture can be rural and isolated often with poor road network and connectivity.
If we start now in our schools with highlighting the importance of this we can develop an understanding of how vital this industry can be.
Children and their families can understand and appreciate the aquaculture and hopefully with better understanding of it

Aquaculture farms in Ireland are mainly located along the western coastline where the Atlantic Ocean provides clean, sheltered, and nutrient-rich waters that are ideal for fish and shellfish farming. For myself ( being from Kerry but living Galway) I now know that both are important centres for aquaculture because of their long coastlines, natural harbours, and strong fishing traditions.
In Galway, areas such as Galway Bay are well known for salmon, mussel, and oyster farming. The calm waters and good water quality make these locations highly suitable for aquaculture. These farms create employment for local people in fish farming, processing, packaging, transport, and tourism. Galway’s seafood industry also attracts visitors who are interested in local food culture and marine activities. This strengthens small businesses, restaurants, and local markets.
Similarly, County Kerry benefits greatly from aquaculture, especially around Dingle Bay and Bantry Bay. Mussel and salmon farming provide income in rural areas where job opportunities may otherwise be limited. Aquaculture helps sustain families and communities by supporting year-round employment and reducing emigration from coastal villages. It also keeps traditional maritime skills alive and maintains a strong connection between local people and the sea.

Hi, just reading you reply and I decided to check out the link you sent. The Taste the Atlantic – a seafood journey is a really nice visual. It could easily be adapted for the classroom.
I didn’t know anything about abalone and that they are native to Ireland. There are some facinatating facts and children would be interested to learn about them as was I.
They are also a highly-prized shellfish delicacy. Due to over exploitation in wild fisheries, they have become scarce in most countries around the world. The farmed species in Ireland were introduced in the 1980’s and are
now farmed commercially in select locations along the ‘Taste the Atlantic – Seafood Journey’ route. -

I found this topic very interesting as I am located along the East Coast in an area where there is significantly less aquaculture particularly with regard to oysters, salmon & muscles. The beach culture seems to be more prevalent in my location however as you move further along the coast and the Geography changes slightly, there is a noticeable shift in how aquaculture ties into the local communities and the different events and initiatives which boost local economies.
Locals always take great pride in the produce within their area and this can be seen in restaurants and cafes where fresh fish and seafood is at the centre of their menu. So many communities utilise aquaculture to bring tourism and local people together to celebrate and showcase the best of Irish seafood. Seafood festivals around the coasts bring thousands of customers and contribute to the economy in many small villages and towns.

I think even though we see the East coast eith less aquaculture I think links could be made with West coast rural schools. Imagine the learning opportunitoes for children from busy urban schools and also rural children learning about urban. Young people nowadays are unaware ofntheir surroundings culture and heritage. Growing up in Tipperary, I didn’t have a strong connection to Ireland’s coastal communities or the aquaculture industry. Since moving to North Co. Dublin and working in a coastal school, I have become much more aware of the importance of aquaculture farms and the role they play in sustaining local communities. Seeing the connection between the sea, local employment, and education has helped me appreciate their wider socio economic value. My husband works in hospitality, where sourcing high quality local produce is valued, and at home we also make a conscious effort to buy and cook locally sourced Irish fish whenever possible. While we know we can’t make a huge impact on our own, we believe that supporting local aquaculture helps sustain jobs, businesses, and coastal livelihoods. This has encouraged me to think more critically about how individual choices can contribute to the long-term sustainability and resilience of Ireland’s coastal communities.

I agree, I was also very unaware what was going on in our coastal areas and never really considered Farming at sea. I found it very interesting learning about this and what we produce. As I work in a school close to a coastal area it would be great to incoporate aquaculture into SESE lessons and the connection with our local community

Aquaculture has embedded itself particularly on the west coast of Ireland, as the agricultural land has lent itself to farmers turning to the sea for income. The weather this year has definitely shown us that more of our coastlines are prime locations for aquaculture also. Sitting here writing this piece in a scorched sunny south east garden makes me wonder if more of our farmers on the east coast should also consider different ways of income. Historically we have read of Peig and how they lived the island life, we also have heard of trawlers that permeat Irish coastlines. Going forward as an island nation we need to make full use of our coastlines. We need to look and develop aquaculture to it’s full potential as the Irish food market is at it’s best and it’s reputation worldwide is highly renowned. Communities like Courtown in Wexford could benefit economically from aquaculture and it just needs investment and promotion to help it flourish. We are an island nation but we need to develop aquaculture farms to reap the rewards and bring benefits to their communities.

Before taking this course, I didn’t know much about where aquaculture farms are located in Ireland or the role they play in coastal communities. I was interested to learn that many farms are based along the west and south coasts, where the natural conditions are suitable for farming species such as salmon, mussels and oysters.What stood out to me most was the positive impact these farms can have on local communities. They provide employment, support local businesses, and help keep rural coastal areas economically active. At the same time, the course highlighted the importance of balancing these benefits with protecting the marine environment and ensuring sustainable practices are followed. It also reinforced the idea that local communities need to be involved and informed so that aquaculture can continue to develop responsibly.
Although I don’t live near the coast, I now have a much better understanding of how important aquaculture is to Ireland’s economy and food production. It has also given me ideas for discussing sustainability, food sources and local industries with my students, helping them make connections between what they learn in school and the wider world. -

As a teacher in Donegal, I found this module particularly relevant because many of the children I teach are growing up close to the coast. I’m also from a coastal county and this module is really opening my eyes to lots of different teaching opportunities for children. Prior to this course, I was not aware of the business market that was available in these communities. I think it would be important to teach about the role this business can play in the community. It is also important to teach the connection between what is in the supermarket and what we produce here in Ireland.

There has always been a tendency for younger generations to move to cities in Ireland, or even further abroad, in order to find consistent employment. Aquaculture is just one resource that we try to highlight to schools and individuals around the country that can provide full-time employment and allow younger people to live and work in the area which they have grown up in which is what many want.
You have mentioned some other excellent resources such as tourism, fisheries, and leisure-based activities which rural communities along the west coast are becoming reliant upon. Integrating these resources into a sustainable model considering social, environmental, and economic factors, will be highly important to rural areas of Ireland to allow communities to be able to thrive.

I have never considered how aquaculture contributes to coastal communities. It provides valuable employment in rural and island areas, helping to sustain local populations, support families, and contribute to the economy of the communities where population decline or limited economic growth are major concerns. Businesses in the locality also benefit e.g. transport companies, suppliers, restaurants and tour operators. These communities can thrive on the many different types of employment created.
Living near the coast I have often thought that salmon farms etc were not the most attractive visually. I had never considered the contribution they were making to the local communities. I can also understand the importance of engaging with the local community to build trust. The economic benefits of successful aquaculture must be balanced with environmental protection and local community interests with coastal communities having strong connections to their local environments.
I believe I have developed a greater understanding of aquaculture and its potential to make a positive contribution to coastal communities. It helps to provide employment, support the local economy, promote the production of locally sustainable food while respecting the needs of the environment and the local community.

Great point Claire. It’s only as I do this course I am seeing the value of aquaculture particularly in small coastal areas. Keeping smaller local communities as a viable option for workers to stay in the locality is imperative. These communities have so much to offer and they can become vibrant hubs again for locals to live and work.

This module highlighted that the location of aquaculture farms is carefully chosen and depends on factors such as clean water, sheltered bays, tides and water quality. It showed how important the natural environment is in supporting sustainable aquaculture and why not every coastal area is suitable for farming.
The module also emphasised the positive role aquaculture plays in coastal communities. As well as producing high-quality seafood, it provides employment, supports local businesses and helps sustain communities that rely on the marine industry. It was interesting to learn about the variety of careers connected to aquaculture and the contribution the sector makes to Ireland’s economy.
From a classroom perspective, this topic offers many opportunities for cross-curricular learning. Pupils can use maps to identify where aquaculture farms are located, explore why certain locations are more suitable than others, and investigate where food comes from. These activities link well with Geography, Science and STEM while also encouraging discussions about sustainability and caring for the marine environment. For a Geography lesson I would start with a map of the World and explain that 71% of Earth is covered in water. I would briefly discuss the socio-economic opportunities that these waters offers.
I would zone in on Europe and then Ireland itself. I would draw attention to the coastline on Ireland’s coasts and introduce cardinal directions North South East and West which are vital for map reading.
I would introduce the term island and show how Ireland is an island surrounded by water with over 7,500 km of coastline and draw attention to the marine landscapes introducing terms such as harbours, bay and beaches and then extend this further to include terms such as estuaries and lakes.
I would zone in on the area that our school is located in. Where possible I would have aerial photographs of the area to help pupils see firsthand mountains, cliffs and beaches and if appropriate landmarks in the area.
Use of online mapping software would allow pupils gain an understanding as to the location of aqua culture farms. I would discuss different types of farms salmon (deep waters, easy to reach areas), oysters (intertidal zones, secluded areas to ensure minimal disruption to trestles and bags) and mussels (requirements similar to those of oyster farms) .I would explain what each farm needs to thrive successfully.
A task to allow pupils discuss in pairs or small groups what coastline and then what exact location would be suitable for each farm .
Mapping and mathematical skills would be introduced and developed.
Part 2:
As noted in module 1 technological developments have allowed aquafarming to be less strenuous on those directly employed in this area. Generation of families may opt to work in this area. Produce from aquafarms are no longer solely exported and are now offered directly to the homemarket. This allows jobs in many areas such as packing eg fishing co-ops, couriers and local hospitality – cafes and restaurants. Tourism is also an area that would benefit from aquafarms allowing people to witness first hand the workings of the farms – how the produce is harvested and explanation of the timeline as to how produce is then served in a as part of a delicious meal in a local restaurant.

Aquaculture in Ireland is mainly based along the western and southern coasts, where the sea conditions are well suited for fish and shellfish farming. The bays and sheltered areas in these regions make it possible for the industry to develop in a fairly natural way. I think it’s easy to see how important this is for coastal communities. A lot of these places are rural, so having industries like aquaculture can make a real difference in terms of jobs and supporting the local economy. It’s not just the farms themselves either, but other work that comes from it as well. It also links quite well to wider ideas like where our food comes from and using natural resources in a responsible way. Overall, it feels like a good example of how an industry can support both the environment and people living in coastal areas.

Very interesting to read about the socioeconomic importance of aquaculture and job opportunities in many areas but especially on the West coast. Areas of environmental responsibility and sustainability are vital to protect livelihoods of those currently employed and to raise awareness to general public and those who will be employed in these areas in the future.

This module gave me a much better understanding of how the location of aquaculture farms is carefully selected. I learned that factors such as clean water, sheltered coastlines, suitable tides and good water quality are essential for successful and sustainable aquaculture. Being from Galway and having connections with fishermen in the Claddagh who fish for lobster and shrimp, I found this particularly interesting as it related closely to my own experiences growing up by the sea.
The module also highlighted the important contribution aquaculture makes to Ireland’s coastal communities. In addition to producing sustainable, high-quality seafood, the industry creates employment, supports local businesses and helps maintain the livelihoods of many families living along the coast. I had not realised the wide range of careers involved in the sector or the significant economic value it brings to these communities.
From a teaching perspective, I think this topic provides excellent opportunities for cross-curricular learning. Pupils can investigate where aquaculture farms are located in Ireland, examine why certain coastal areas are more suitable than others, and explore the importance of sustainable food production. These activities naturally link with Geography, Science and STEM while encouraging pupils to think critically about protecting our marine environment. As I will be teaching a senior class in September, I look forward to incorporating these ideas into my classroom and helping pupils develop a greater appreciation of Ireland’s coastal resources and the importance of aquaculture.

I also gained a greater understanding of the location of aquaculture farms around the coast and the importance of mapping to ensure the best and most sustainable areas are used. It is great to see the number of careers that can come from aquaculture and the variety of skills needed to make it successful in an area. It allows many people with lots of different skill sets to become part of a community, which in turn allows for socio economic development.

Aquaculture is predominant in many coastal communities particularly along the northwest, west and southwest coast of Ireland. These are areas where due to it’s geography, it’s not very suitable for agriculture. Rocks dominate the landscape, soil quality is poor, there’s little shelter and infrastructure. However,aquaculture is best suited to the area between Donegal and Kerry due to the weathering of our coast creating sheltered bays, inlets, islands and Killery Fjord, giving ideal conditions for aquaculture.Salmon, mussels, oysters aqnd other seafood grow succcessfully in our clean, sheltered waters.Aquaculture also provides much needed employment in counties where employment opportunities can be limited.Opportunities in farming, processing, transport and in the spinoff economy e.g. shops, restaurants and other local businesses can help an area hold onto its young people and attract investment into the area.

Ireland’s location in relation to the Gulf Stream and North Atlantic Drift makes for an ideal climate for aquaculture. We are lucky to have sheltered inlets, estuaries and Killary fjord which all allow us to harvest some of the best oysters, mussels and salmon stock in the world. The west coast of Ireland is where these aquaculture activities predominantly take place due to the temperate climate, shelter from the very harsh sea weather conditions and the semidiurnal tides which can be predicted each day. Aquaculture is essential for coastal communities and retaining populations within them. With huge numbers of young people choosing to leave coastal and rural areas for cities and emigration, it is essential that we highlight the benefits of staying and working in aquaculture. If people choose to stay there is a knock on effect with businesses, schools, sporting organisations and social development in an area. Opportunities are there to develop careers in areas such as aquafarming, mapping and sustainability to ensure a better and greener future for the next generations.

Most of Ireland is well suited to agriculture due to its ideal ‘Goldilocks climate’. However, coastal areas of the west coast and mountainous terrain are not suited for traditional agricultural practices. It is in these areas Aquaculture is prevalent. The differences in coastal features means a variety of aquaculture is supported.
I live in an area where agriculture is common. From a socio-economic view, farming shaped the history and development of much of what makes up the area where I live, with not just the farmers who work on the farms being dependant on it, but the many other industries and professions that come about indirectly. With this not being an accessible option in many coastal and mountainous areas, I find it fascinating that a parallel industry grew up in these areas that I knew so little about – being so different from what I know I am looking forward to learning about comparable socio – economic impact aquaculture has had in these areas in the next module.
Lesson plan for a map plotting activity
Living in a landlocked area, I would begin with a lesson first on identifying different parts of the coast. I would start with a KWL chart to determine the vocabulary and knowledge the children already have. I would then write the relevant vocabulary such as sea shore, estuary, bay harbour, and islands, and have the class discuss which ones they know, which ones sound familiar, and what is new. I would put pictures of example locations on the interactive white board for each new word. I’d imagine the students in my area would not have much prior knowledge about this!
Next I would divide the children into groups, and provide each group with a part featuring a section of Ireland’s coast. I would ask them to affix labels to their parts of the map using their new vocabulary and knowledge. I would leave the vocabulary and pictures on the board for a reference, and circulate to differentiate as needed.Finally I would have each group present their findings to the class, drawing comparisons and discussing what impact the children think this might have on different areas. I would then return to our KWL chart, fill in our new knowledge, and identify any areas we need to explore further.
I would do this lesson before a lesson on the different types of aquaculture, displaying the map sections in the classroom so we could refer back to it as we move through the different types of aquaculture, what is required, and have the children pick out areas on their own maps most suited to each type.

I particularly liked how you compared aquaculture with agriculture and highlighted that, while they are very different industries, they both play a vital socio-economic role in supporting communities. Aquaculture farms have really boosted the local economy of the communities in which they are situated. Places like Killibegs in Donegal for example are small communities and towns that may not have my professional job opportunities for the young people born there. Young people may therefore feel the need to move to larger town and cities. However, since aquaculture is very labour intensive it requires a large strong workforce, hence younger people are staying in their communities to work and hence are contributing to the local economy. The integration of this topic in our primary schools will help the children to learn about industry and the importance of industry, traditional practices in Ireland, the benefits of aquaculture in certain areas and how human activity can help shape an area and develop an area when they utilise the natural environment around them. As a teacher in a farming community, this could also be emphasised due to the high employment rates in this area.

Reflecting on the location of aquaculture farms in Ireland has highlighted for me the valuable learning opportunities they offer in a senior primary classroom. Ireland’s extensive coastline, sheltered bays and high-quality coastal waters make many areas ideal for aquaculture. Exploring why farms are located in these places enables pupils to develop an understanding of how physical geography influences economic activity and the lives of people in coastal communities.
Teaching a senior class in Cork, I am keen to strengthen pupils’ awareness of our local maritime environment through authentic, place-based learning. We are fortunate to have an oyster farm in our locality, and I would like to develop links with this enterprise through a class visit or by inviting local producers into the classroom. This would allow pupils to investigate how aquaculture supports local employment, contributes to the economy and promotes sustainable food production, while also gaining a greater appreciation of the importance of our coastal environment.
Aquaculture provides an excellent context for discussing sustainability, biodiversity, water quality and the responsible use of marine resources. It also highlights the interdependence between people, place and the environment, helping pupils understand how local industries contribute to the wellbeing of communities.
This reflects the aims of the new SEE Primary Specification, which places a strong emphasis on local learning, sustainability, active enquiry and developing meaningful connections with the community. Living in a coastal town has given me a real appreciation for the role aquaculture plays in everyday life. It is not just something I have learned about in a course, but something I see whenever I am near the shore. Oyster and mussel farms are a familiar sight, and over the years I have watched local businesses develop products from seaweed, including seaweed baths, food products, and beauty products. It is interesting to see how the sea provides opportunities in so many different ways.
This has made me realise that aquaculture is about much more than producing seafood. That is an excellent point about seaweed Karolina. Here is Sligo we have a thriving and very sucessful seaweed bath and product range with Voya. I listened to a radio interview with the founder and it was so interesting to hear how they obtain the local seaweed and recognise the importance of assoociating their brand with the local area. This has been very important for the local econonoy as well as improving the image of the area of Strandhill for tourism.

A lot of Ireland’s land on the west coast has mountains or rocky terrain with poor soil which is not suitable for agriculture. Aquaculture is therefore is mostly popular on the Atlantic coast in the bays and inlets which are sheltered from the strong Atlantic winds. Aquaculture is very important to many of these areas, expecially those that are remote since there is often very little opportunity for work there. Employment is created in so many ways both directly and indirectly. There are those who work directly on trawlers and fish farms as well as those indirectly impacted by aquaculture. People are needed to fish and work on fishfarms, others are needed to repair boats and nets, others are needed to check the cleanliness and health of the waters and the fish. Delivery of the fish to restaurants and shops creats employment for drivers. Employment is then also created for chefs in restaurants. Many of these villages also have a seafood restaurant in them which attracts tourism too.

A lack of efficient transport links, limited public services, inadequate infrastructure, poor broadband connectivity, and fewer profitable retail businesses all contribute to economic challenges. These conditions often encourage younger people to leave in search of better education, employment, and career prospects elsewhere, resulting in declining populations and ageing communities.
A thriving aquaculture industry helps to reverse this trend by creating stable, year-round employment and supporting many indirect jobs in processing, transport, equipment supply, engineering, and local services. The wages earned by aquaculture workers are spent within the community, benefiting local shops, restaurants, schools, and other businesses. Completing this module has enhanced my understanding of why aquaculture farms in Ireland are concentrated along the western coastline. I now appreciate how sheltered bays, inlets and fjords, together with Ireland’s mild temperate climate, provide the ideal conditions for sustainable aquaculture. The module also highlighted the strong relationship between Ireland’s physical geography and the location of different farming industries. As I live in a rural area that is far from the coast, I had not previously considered the significant role aquaculture plays in Ireland’s economy. I found it particularly interesting to learn that, in many western coastal regions where agriculture is less viable due to mountainous terrain, aquaculture provides valuable employment and supports local businesses through processing, transport and tourism. I also learnt a lot in this module about the benefits of the Irish coastline’s geographical features, such as fjords, that makes it such an ideal location for aquaculture. I never thought about the obstruction to agriculture mountainous areas would place. These areas are fortunate to have such geographical features and climate conditions to facilitate aquaculture, and compensate by providing alternative employment opportunities. -
I can relate to this Orla, I never really gave much thought to the division of agri/aquaculture and what it offers in employment and sustaining a community. And that’s even me coming from a farming background in Munster! I really enjoy that this course has pointed out some aspects of our culture and heritage that we otherwise take for granted, or indeed never stopped to consider.

The location of aquaculture farms along the western seaboard is a fantastic example of how we have adapted industry to our geographical location. These farms offer vital employment to the people of these communties both directly and indirectly.
Here in County Sligo for example there are people employed directly to work in aquacultture and then there is the employment created by the supply of produce to restaurants and cafes in the community. We actually have a dedicated oyster cafe in Sligo town which specialises in locally farmed oysters. This also plays a part in how we package ourselves to tourists as a county with excellent, fresh local produce, from farm to fork.
I remember visiting Killary fjord and sampling the local mussels which were being sold in a pub restaurant in the village. Other towns that I have visitied as a tourist include Castletown Bere and Baltimore ,where there was a great selection of restaurants selling local produce. This has helped shaped the identity of these places as tourist destiantions of high quality seafood and certainly add to the appeal of visiting these beautiful west coast locations.

Hi Catherina, I only learned about Ireland’s fjord today in this course. I would love to make a trip up to sample the fresh oysters! I notice this is a big tourist attraction in cities like Vancouver, Melbourne and Perth. Perhaps, Ireland needs to do more to make it a larger part of the tourist trail. Aquaculture farms of Ireland are located mainly along the West Coast. This landscape is mostly dominanted my mountains making it unsuitable for agriculture but is where aquaculture is dominant. The Western Atlantic coastline has many land features such as sheltered inlets and estuaries not forgetting Killary fjord. These sheltered areas are ideal for aquaculture. Irelands climate being the ideal “goldilocks climate” not too hot or too cold and the gulf stream providing warm water during the winter and cooler waters in the summer provide optimum conditions for the aquaculture farms of Ireland’s west coast. Aquaculture farms support local and coastal communities directly through stable employment( the skill level is vast providing many opportunties) and indirectly, providing a sustainable food source, supporting and encouraging small businesses and also indirectly by boosting the local economy, money generated in the area will be spent in other businesses in the area, promoting tourism ,and also the maintainance and improved of local infrastructure such as roads etc because of these industries.

I was reading about Réalta na Mara’s new shellfish and oyster tours this morning, and funnily enough I’m actually watching the small fishing boats out at sea. It’s lovely to see how local aquaculture is opening up to visitors and giving people a real sense of the community behind the seafood.

I think aquaculture is really important for coastal communities because it provides jobs in areas where employment opportunities can sometimes be limited. People can work directly on the farms or in related industries such as processing, transport, equipment supply, and maintenance. This helps keep money circulating within local communities and supports small businesses.
Another benefit is that aquaculture helps people stay and work in their local area rather than having to move elsewhere to find employment. This is especially important for rural coastal communities that might otherwise struggle with keeping young people in the area. Their location reflects the need for clean water, appropriate tides and suitable environmental conditions.

It supports not only those directly involved in farming seafood but also jobs in processing, transport, tourism and local businesses. To be honest, before this, I never really stopped to think about why aquaculture farms are found in certain parts of coastal Ireland and not others. I knew they needed the sea obviously, but I didn’t appreciate how important sheltered bays, clean water and suitable environmental conditions are for producing healthy seafood.
Growing up on the coast, oyster farms and fishing boats were simply part of the landscape for me. Seeing them every day, it was easy to take them for granted. This module made me realise just how much they contribute to coastal communities. They provide employment, support local businesses and help keep many smaller coastal areas economically active throughout the year. It also reminded me that aquaculture is often a family tradition, with knowledge and skills being passed from one generation to the next.
As someone teaching in an inland school, I think it’s important that children understand these connections. Many of my pupils are familiar with the River Blackwater but have little experience of the coast. Comparing the two environments would help them see how healthy waterways, whether rivers or the sea, support wildlife, food production and the communities that depend on them.

Hi Caoimhe, It is so easy for all of us to take our everyday local landscapes for granted, but bringing your own coastal perspective into an inland classroom is a great approach. Using a river the children already know is a great local hook because it makes abstract concepts like water catchment and water quality instantly real and relatable for them.

I see great value in exploring where our food comes from with students. Ireland’s western Atlantic coastline is ideal for aquaculture because of its unique physical geography. While the west coast is very mountainous with poor soil quality—making traditional farming difficult—its natural bays and inlets offer fantastic shelter for aquafarming. Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, our coast benefits from a mild climate without extreme weather. This environment provides perfect habitats for a variety of seafood. Students can easily explore these habitats, from Pacific Rock Oysters on flat shorelines to salmon and mussels in deeper waters.
Socio-economically, fish and shellfish farming acts as a vital lifeline for our remote coastal communities. In regions where typical jobs are scarce, aquaculture provides steady, year-round employment for local families. It supports local logistics, boat maintenance, and engineering businesses. Teaching our pupils about this industry helps them understand how coastal towns adapt to their local environment. It helps them see how communities build a sustainable, globally recognised food industry right on their doorstep.-

Aquaculture farms are located along the coastline of Ireland in more rural and less populated areas such as North Mayo and Donegal. Over the years, many of the locals had no choice but to emigrate to find sustainable employment. More recently locals were forced to work in urban regions like Dublin or Galway.
With recent changes in working from home and now with the increased awareness, consumption and education around the importance of aquaculture, these farms can make a big impact in keeping employment and business offsets in their local region.This in turn has an effect on an increase, which is very much needed, in some rural school populations. There is a great benefit in helping to increase numbers of people
who want to live and work in their own community in an Irish business like Aquaculture farming which is sustainable and gives back to the area in creating eco-friendly employment.-
I agree with you Olive. At one stage the local oyster farm used to employ most of the young people on the local football team. It meant they were providing employment and had the knock on effect that they were around for games during the season. However, lately he said it is getting more difficult to get the young workforce as the work is quite manual and not as attractive as other jobs. They are investing in new innovative ideas which require less manpower.

I agree with Laura Brehon’s reflective piece where she emphasises the importance of Aquaculture for employment and local involvement, and also to support local businesses as these areas are not suitable for farming or industry, because of their remoteness and poor infrastructure. These areas where aquaculture is being developed could be vital to provide fresh produce to restaurants, shops and families too which would be very beneficial to both tourism and local development.

Aquaculture or fish farming is mainly situated on the North Atlantic Way Coastline and on the coast of County Down. As only 65 per cent of land in Ireland is suitable for Agriculture that leaves a 35 per cent that is unsuitable and therefore it is vital that we use our coastline to supplement it with fish farming. As we have a very extensive coastline, of 7,500km it is very important that we develop it to produce healthy food for sale and for consumption. The production of Atlantic Salmon, Pacific Rock Oysters and Blue Mussels are central to adding to the food supply and to the food choice as we move away from traditional meat consumption. This is vital both for local communities and also economically for the export market.
As our cities and the housing supply is under fierce pressure because of lack of supply, it is important that we are developing other communities in non city areas, where there is an abundance of land and space available. I am familiar with the area on the north western coast of Donegal, where people traditionally sold turf from local bogs to make a living as well as fishing too.Today, the fishing has decreased dramatically and fish farming is a very good alternative for those workers. The bogs can be developed and structured to build on where sites are available. Communities need to adapt and BIM and Aquaculture is the way forward and you do not need a lot of capital but you do need to inform local communities of the very positive benefits.
The first step is educating the next generation on Aquaculture and its benefits and in these two module I have learned of the excellent aids available to teach and to enable pupils to learn the facts on this subject.

As someone from Inis Mór on the Aran Islands, this topic is particularly relevant to me. Growing up, I always understood how important the sea was to our community, but I never fully appreciated the role aquaculture plays in supporting coastal areas across Ireland. Learning about where aquaculture farms are located and why they are established in certain coastal regions has given me a greater understanding of the industry.

This module helped me understand the reason for the location of aquaculture farms mainly along the western coastline of Ireland. I was curious to discover that the sheltered bays, inlets and fjords are the perfect conditions for farming species such as salmon, mussels and oysters. The mild oceanic climate of Ireland, the influence of the Gulf Stream and the natural features of the coastline are all important factors in making these areas suitable for aquaculture.
I also became more appreciative of the socio-economic contribution of aquaculture to the coastal communities. In many western coastal areas, the mountainous terrain and poor soils limit traditional agriculture, and aquaculture provides important employment and business opportunities. It also supports food production, tourism and the long-term sustainability of many rural communities.From a teaching point of view this subject provides excellent opportunities to integrate Geography, Science and Maths through map reading, investigating coastal features and exploring how the natural environment influences where people live and work. It encourages pupils to think critically about the relationship between the environment, local industries and sustainable development and also helps them develop a greater appreciation of Ireland’s coastal communities and marine resources.

I was also curious about the conditions for aquaculture farming and that Ireland for all it’s dismal weather is the perfect location for fish farming. Living in the East Coast the socio economic benefits of fish faming are not something that I would have any considered. Our climate and weather make it perfect for farming on land in Ireland. Rain and sun make it easy for us to grow crops and plants. Because of our climate 65% of our land is suitable for agriculture. Another key vocabulary word I learned during this module is ‘Goldilocks’ climate. What a lovely term to describe our climate!
The map showing the predominant areas of farming in Ireland is very visual and would be good to have in the classroom. It would help enhance the children’s understanding and retention of information. The colours used highlight the areas of aquaculture well, on the Atlantic coast. The Atlantic Ocean has shaped our western coast into many bays, inlets, estuaries and islands. These features along the coast allow for aquaculture. Coastal communities benefit from fisheries, tourism and recreation. Some can be seasonal while others provide year-round employment. The ocean provides food, medicine, shelter, breeding grounds and it allows us to enjoy a mild climate. Aquaculture can present challenges too, such as, pollution, resource allocation issues and disease outbreaks. However, if we look after the ocean, it will look after us.-

Being from rural west of Ireland I learned a lot in this module relevant to where I live. Topics of community, local enterprises and infrastructure sprung to mind. The location of aquaculture farms in Ireland along the Atlantic way, mainly the north-west, south-west and west coast contribute to the livelihood of so many individuals and communities.
Having moved to Dublin myself along with so many others to go to college it is very apparent how important aquaculture is to small rural western communities as a means of income and sustainability.
How aquacutlure can contribute socio-economically to coastal communities is huge! If looking towards the future it means that local people can stay in rural west Ireland wouldnt it be lovely! I liked the videos of the chefs experiencing food along the wild Atlantic way. There is probably such a vast amount of people in Ireland who have no idea the aquaculture on our doorstep and how lucky we are to have good quality and local seafood available.
I liked the geography behind our ‘goldilocks’ climate. This would be very interesting for senior class students to learn about. -

Living in the North East, we are not as exposed to aquaculture farms and hence I’ve never really thought about where they are located and their contribution socio economically to coastal communities. The East coast of Ireland is lucky in that our land is suitable for dairy and arable farming and we do not suffer from excessive rugged terrain. It is great that the West Coast offers the right environment for producing seafood, sheltered bays, clean water and suitable environmental conditions.
This type of farming provides our restaurants with beautiful seafood to the delight of seafood lovers. It makes me proud that these are Irish and that we are known for our excellent seafood offerings. What makes it even better is that this provides employment and supports local business in rural areas that would not be considered economically viable otherwise. It also keeps a tradition alive whilst protecting our seas from over fishing.
I can see many cross curricular links that can be used in the primary school setting Geography, maths and SPHE. Children should be encouraged to study the Irish landscape and the different type of farming in Ireland and gain an appreciation and wide understanding that all these farms contribute to our economy, our traditions and our wellbeing. -

Module two outlined the location of aquaculture farms in Ireland. I knew that they were primarily on western coastlines but I hadn’t thought about the significance of the location in bays and inlets as there is more shelter there from the Atlantic ocean.
These aquaculture farms support local communities both directly and indirectly. In direct ways, these farms create so many opportunities for work. Surveying is one role that is very significant in these locations. From underwater and seabed surveys to surveys focusing on conservation efforts in the area, lots of research is needed. Other jobs such as skippers to drive the boats and workers to pack and sell the fish are also very important. Some interesting roles include workers to turn the oyster nets at high tide and workers to feed the salmon daily. Aquamarine farms are evidently a big operation and very important in local communities.
Indirectly the businesses can collaborate with Irish colleges and universities on marine science and aquaculture research.This can lead to universities offering apprenticeships and internships to students. They can also indirectly lead to the government investing in roads and infrastructure in the area which benefits the local communities. It also brings in tourism to the area which is always a benefit economically.

When I started looking at aquaculture in Ireland, I didn’t realise how important it is for many coastal communities. I think aquaculture is really important because it provides jobs in places where there may not be many other employment opportunities. At the same time, I think it’s important that aquaculture is managed properly. If farms aren’t looked after, they could have a negative impact on the environment. Protecting water quality and marine life is just as important as creating jobs.
Overall, I think aquaculture is a positive industry for Ireland. It supports local economies, provides fresh seafood and helps keep many coastal communities alive. This was an extremely interesting topic of me to explore. Being from a landlocked county on the South-East if Ireland, my knowledge of aquaculture farms was quite limited. Understandably, most of the aquaculture farms in Ireland are located on the west coast of Ireland where the water is nutrient-dense and suitable for fish farming. Coastal communities on the west of Ireland benefit greatly socio-economically from this industry, with many areas being well-known for their high quality, fresh seafood. This can be seen in areas such as Galway, where they are known for oysters and mussels and Kerry for high-quality salmon. Such aquaculture farming benefits locals by encouraging tourism to particular areas on the west of Ireland. This module highlights the connection between the resources around us, the industries that utilize these natural resources and the communities that benefit from them whether it be in employment through production, distribution, sales or hospitality.

Where I live in County Wexford, aquaculture is mainly centered around shellfish farming, particularly in and around Kilmore Quay, which is quite near to my school.
Kilmore Quay is best known as one of Ireland’s busiest fishing ports and aquaculture is also an important part of the local economy. The local fishing factories provide employment for a number of people while also creating work for boat operators, seafood processors, transport companies and marine engineering businesses. This means that the economic benefits extend beyond the farms / boats themselves, supporting a wide range of businesses in the area and beyond.
Aquaculture also helps keep the harbour busy throughout the year, making the local seafood industry less dependent on wild fish catches alone. Alongside fishing, it contributes to a more sustainable coastal economy. There are also a couple of very successful businesses doing boat trips over to the Saltee islands to see the wildlife and another in Wexford Quay in the town centre. Overall, aquaculture has become an important source of income and employment in Wexford, helping to support the local community while producing high-quality seafood that is sold across Ireland and exported to international markets.-
It was interesting to learn about the importance of aquaculture in Kilmore Quay and the wider Wexford community. I agree that it has a positive impact beyond the farms themselves by supporting many local businesses and jobs. Before doing this course, I didn’t realise how important aquaculture is to many coastal communities around Ireland. Learning about where aquaculture farms are located helped me understand why sheltered coastal areas are chosen and how these farms support local jobs and businesses. They also provide a source of food and help keep many rural communities going.
At the same time, the course showed that it is important to protect the marine environment and make sure aquaculture is carried out responsibly. Finding the right balance between supporting local communities and caring for the environment is essential.
I would introduce this topic using maps, photographs and simple discussions about where seafood comes from. I think it would help pupils make connections between the sea, the food we eat and the people who depend on it for their livelihoods. It is a topic that encourages curiosity and helps children appreciate Ireland’s coastal communities.

I like the idea of mapwork to introduce this topic. This could be used as an overall theme around mapwork in the class to include coastal life in other countries in europe and a comparison on the socio economic impacts in other countries. Colour coding maps of three diffferent countires showing theses areas could be a great avenue to label maps to include towns, cities etc.

As a teacher in an urban DEIS Band 1 school, I believe many of my pupils have little understanding of the connection between coastal communities and aquaculture. Exploring this topic in the classroom would help broaden their awareness of different industries within Ireland and encourage them to appreciate the importance of sustainable economic development.

I believe aqua culture can make a significant socio-economic contribution to coastal communities. As i’m from Donegal, I have always knew that aquaculture is an important part of life in many coastal communities, but this module has helped me understand its also has economic and social importance. These farms are mainly located along Ireland’s west and northwest coasts because of the clean water and sheltered bays, which provide great conditions for farming salmon, mussels, and oysters.
In places like those in Donegal, aquaculture creates lots of employment and supports local businesses, including seafood, transport, and suppliers. In rural coastal areas, these jobs are important because there are fewer other jobs than in bigger towns and cities. I also think aquaculture helps to keep communities alive by allowing people to live and work in the local area instead of having to move away.
One thing I took from this topic is that while aquaculture brings loads of benefits, it also needs to be managed well. Looking after thewater and fish life homes is essential so that the industry can continue to grow without damaging the environment.

I enjoyed this module as it helped explain why aquaculture farms are located in particular parts of Ireland. I would have expected many were along the west coast, but I had never really thought about how the geography, sheltered bays and Ireland’s climate all influence where different species can be farmed. It also made sense that aquaculture has become so important in coastal communities where traditional agriculture isn’t always possible.
As a school principal, I’m interested in how new learning can be brought back into the classroom. I could see obvious links with Geography, Science and STEM, but what stood out most was the mapping activity. This September I’ll be leading a Community of Practice with teachers around inquiry-based learning, and I could see an activity like this working well as an authentic inquiry. Rather than being told where aquaculture farms should be located, children investigate maps, ask questions, test ideas and justify their decisions using evidence. I think that approach develops much deeper understanding while also helping pupils appreciate the important role aquaculture plays in many coastal communities.

Before completing this module, I hadn’t really thought about why aquaculture farms are located in particular parts of Ireland. From a teaching point of view, I can see lots of opportunities to bring this topic into the classroom. It would also help pupils make connections between what they learn in school and the world around them.

Living on the coast in Donegal has given me a greater appreciation of the role aquaculture plays in local communities. Living in Ireland, we are fortunate to have a long coastline with many aquaculture farms located in coastal communities. We are especially lucky to have an oyster farm close to our own locality. Before learning more about aquaculture, I realised that, like many children, I knew very little about the work that takes place there, despite it being on our doorstep. This has highlighted for me the importance of helping young people understand where their food comes from and the role aquaculture plays in Irish life.
After recently visiting our local oyster farm, I gained a much better understanding of the industry and the challenges it faces today. The manager explained that, years ago, the farm had no difficulty employing local young men and women to carry out the hard manual work involved. These jobs provided valuable employment opportunities for people living in the area. However, he said it is now much more difficult to find young people who have a driving licence and are willing or able to do such physically demanding work.
As a result, the farm is exploring new and innovative ways of working. The manager explained that they are investigating methods of using the natural movement of the tides to help turn the oysters, reducing the amount of manual labour required. It was interesting to see how the industry is adapting and using innovation to overcome modern challenges while continuing to produce high-quality oysters.
Aquaculture farms make an important socio-economic contribution to coastal communities. They provide local employment in fish and shellfish farming, processing, transport and tourism, helping families remain in rural coastal areas. These farms also support local businesses such as cafés, shops and accommodation providers by attracting visitors interested in seafood and marine experiences.

For my ASD class, I’d use a big map of our own coast, so pupils can see a place they know. I’d keep instructions short and use pictures and symbols, not just words, so non-verbal pupils can join in too. Pupils would work in pairs or small groups. For maths, I’d keep it simple and hands-on, using string or counters to measure, instead of just numbers.

Fish farming and fishing support jobs and family income in coastal villages like ours. It also brings other local jobs, like boat work, processing, and trade.
Learning where and why aquaculture happens helps my pupils understand their own community better. It connects them to the sea, the jobs around them, and gives a real-life, visual way to learn about geography, nature, and how people earn a living near the coast.

Aquafarms in Ireland are located mostly on the west coast. They are located in areas of clean water and in areas that provide appropriate conditions for marine life. This module made me reflect a lot on aqua farming and the location of aquafarms and I have learned a lot. I think the location of aquafarms is very important and plays a huge role in the lives of the people that live nearby. Coastal communities often have a lot of fishing history and I actually live in an area like this so I can make some personal connections. Aquafarming provides many people with jobs and income, and provides local people with fresh local seafood, things that we often take for granted.
The socio economic impact of aquafarming is huge: jobs for fishermen and in turn local cafes and businesses, more tourism, more investment in important infrastructure etc.

Last year, we visited Bundoran twice on holidays. The first time was during peak tourist season, but the second time if was off season and it was sad to see how quiet the town was. I’m sure it has a huge impact on the job availability and the local community. I researched there, and there are some nearby shellfish farms like Mullaghmore Sea farm and other oyster farms in Donegal. This shows that the aquaculture and farms aren’t just about food production, but they also provide employment, and supports local businesses all year around. The jobs could be directly involved in the fishing, but also the spin off jobs like maintenance, transport etc. I also remember how clear the water was on the Atlantic coast, and it makes sense that the west would be good and suited to the sustainable aquaculture.

I have to say that I never thought too deeply about the location of aquaculture farms until now but I find it really interesting that they are all based along the west coast of Ireland, a place that benefits from the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and that is unsuitable for other types of farming due to the mountainous nature of the land. I thought it was interesting how these areas provide perfect natural conditions for different types of seafood. The aquaculture farms in these areas contribute socio-economically to the local area in various ways. It provides direct and indirect job opportunities, sustains population in rural areas, unites communities and families and leads to the creation of better infrastructure. I have noticed that some of these farms are family-run and have been established for generations by people who are used to these conditions and know what is expected when it comes to aquaculture.

Cromane, Co.Kerry in Castlemaine harbour is a perfect example of how geography shapes aquaculture. Réalta na Mara is a local familyrun enterprise and farms mussels and oysters in these conditions. The closestrestaurnant is less than a km away. It supplies this (Jacks Restaurant in Cromane) and other local golf course restaurants and places along the wild atlantic way,in Killorglin and local fish shops. They also run oyster‑tasting tours, giving visitors a real sea‑to‑plate experience.
What stands out to me is how aquaculture supports coastal communities both directly and indirectly. It provides steady jobs, keeps younger families living locally, and strengthens community identity. Much like the Dingle food festival-Cromane’s has its own annual seafood festival with water sports, tasting sessions, cookery demos, seashore foraging and live music. This is a prime example of how aquaculture can boost tourism while protecting and promoting the marine environment.

It would be wonderful to have another sustainable industry that provides year-round employment and supports local families. Aquaculture creates direct jobs in farming, harvesting, processing, and transport, while also benefiting local businesses such as equipment suppliers, restaurants, and tourism operators. The industry helps sustain populations in remote areas by providing stable incomes and encouraging younger people to remain in their communities rather than relocating elsewhere for work.
As future primary school teachers, I think we have an important role in helping children understand where their food comes from and how industries such as aquaculture contribute to their local communities. Learning about aquaculture can be linked to subjects such as Geography, Science, and Social, Environmental and Scientific Education (SESE). Children could explore the importance of protecting marine ecosystems, investigate the different species farmed in Ireland, and examine how sustainable food production supports both the environment and the economy. If schools are located near coastal communities, visits from local aquaculture producers or field trips to aquaculture sites could provide meaningful real-world learning experiences. These opportunities can help children appreciate the value of their local environment while also introducing them to future career possibilities within the blue economy.
I believe the expansion of aquaculture should always be balanced with environmental protection. Responsible site selection, careful monitoring of water quality, and sustainable farming practices are essential to protect marine ecosystems and maintain public confidence in the industry. 1. This module has helped me better understand why aquaculture farms are located in particular coastal areas of Ireland. Factors such as suitable water quality, shelter from strong tides, and access to infrastructure all influence where farms can operate successfully. I had not fully considered how much planning and environmental assessment is involved before a site is approved.

Classes: SeniorI would begin this lesson by introducing pupils to oceans as a resource by exploring how little of our waters are used for aquaculture. Using Google Maps on satellite view, the class would identify natural coastal features and begins to recognise the geography of the Irish coastline.
The children’s attention would be drawn to beaches, rivers, harbours and estuaries, comparing rural and urban areas to understand how landscape influences human activity.
Working in groups, pupils discuss where aquaculture is possible and where agriculture is more suitable, supported by information around what our main aquaculture crops are. They would then apply mapping and mathematical thinking to plot suitable locations for fish, mussel and oyster farms, justifying their choices based on depth, shelter and water movement.

I really like this lesson idea. I think using a local area like Mayo makes the activity much more meaningful for the children, especially when they’re working with places they might already know or have visited. I also like how you’ve linked Geography and Maths together through map skills, as it gives the lesson a real purpose rather than teaching the skills in isolation. The part where pupils have to justify why they chose a particular location is a nice way to encourage discussion and critical thinking. I could definitely see something similar working in Kerry using Dingle Bay or Kenmare Bay. It sounds like a lesson that would keep the pupils engaged while helping them understand why aquaculture farms are located where they are.

Using the location of the aquaculture farms in Ireland will be most helpful in developing awareness of industry and culture outside of Dublin for my students. I will be teaching 5th Class this year and from my experience, many children in Dublin only consider agriculture when they think of farming, or indeed industry, outside of Dublin. It can also be very difficult to deliver the SESE and STEAM curricula in developing geographical awareness of areas outside of Leinster given how broad the curriculum is and how time pressed we are in delivering the new framework with its emphasis on talk and active learning. I look forward to using the maps and discuss lifestyles and economic activities in coastal areas. There is much that can be done to include diverse learners using aquaculture, particularly in focusing on the three main species being farmed.

As a 5th and 6th class teacher, I can see many opportunities to explore this topic in the classroom. It links naturally with the Primary Science and Geography curricula, helping pupils understand Ireland’s natural resources, coastal environments and sustainable food production. It also provides opportunities for discussion about environmental responsibility, biodiversity and the importance of balancing economic development with protecting marine ecosystems. Many pupils are familiar with the sea through family holidays or local visits, making the topic meaningful and engaging.

Before completing this module, I didn’t realise just how important the location of aquaculture farms is or the impact they have on coastal communities around Ireland. It was interesting to learn why farms are set up in certain areas, such as sheltered bays with clean water, and how different parts of the country are suited to farming different types of fish and shellfish.
Teaching in Dunmore East, Co. Waterford, made this topic feel very relevant. We are lucky to live by the sea, and many of the children in our school come from fishing families or have parents and relatives working in local marine businesses. Learning more about aquaculture has given me a better understanding of how it supports jobs, local businesses and the community as a whole. It’s not just the farms themselves that benefit. There are also people involved in processing, transport, engineering and tourism.
I also liked learning about the idea of social licence and how important it is for local communities to support aquaculture projects. It showed me that it’s not enough for farms to be successful financially; they also need to care for the environment and work closely with the people who live nearby.
I think this is a great topic to bring into the classroom. It links really well with Geography and Science, and using local examples will make it much more meaningful for the children. It will also help them appreciate the role the sea plays in their own community and understand why protecting it is so important.

This module really stood out to me because aquaculture has always been part of my family’s life. My family owned a fish farm, and growing up I saw how important it was, not just for us but for the whole community. During the 1980s, when many people had to emigrate to find work, the fish farm gave jobs to local people and helped many families, including my own, stay in the area. It made me realise just how important aquaculture can be for coastal communities.
The module helped me understand why so many aquaculture farms are found along Ireland’s west coast. Sheltered bays, inlets and deep water provide the right conditions for species such as salmon, mussels and oysters. I also learned how Ireland’s mild climate, helped by the Gulf Stream, makes it a good place for aquaculture.
I also liked the mapping activities because they show children how geography is connected to real life. They are practical, engaging and would work well in the classroom. Overall, this module helped me better understand the link between Ireland’s geography, climate and aquaculture, while also reminding me of the positive impact it has had on my own family and many other coastal communities-

Ireland’s western coastline is dotted with a busy aquaculture sector, with farming of mainly salmon, oysters and mussels. A good example of this is in Killary Fjord between Galway and Mayo. Locations like this bring plenty of economic benefit to the area as land agriculture can be less economical in these areas. Apart from tourism, they can struggle for other industry as they are quite remote, so aquaculture is invaluable. It also gives locals a strong connection to their marine environment.
As a primary teacher in a seaside location on the east coast, I try to connect my classes to the coast as much as possible. I’ve typically done this through seashore safaris and project work about Dublin Bay. Aquaculture is yet another fascinating feature of our coastline that I have no doubt would pique the interest of my 6th class this year. Activities about the likes of farm to fork, sea mapping and lifecycles of marine life will be very useful for the year ahead and beyond.

I agree that aquaculture is a really interesting topic for children to learn about, especially when they live near the coast. I liked your example of Killary Fjord because it shows how aquaculture can provide jobs in areas where there may not be many other types of work available. It also shows how important the sea is to local communities.
I think using Dublin Bay with your 6th class would work really well. The children could learn about where seafood comes from and how it gets from the sea to our plates. Activities like sea mapping and looking at the lifecycles of marine animals would make it more hands-on and interesting for them. I also agree that getting children outside and allowing them to explore the coast is a great way of helping them understand these topics. It would probably make the learning more memorable than just reading about aquaculture in a book.

Shellfish farming is also common in these areas, with mussels grown in places such as Killary Harbour in Galway and oysters farmed in Galway Bay. On the south coast, areas such as Cork Harbour and Roaringwater Bay are well known for oyster farming, while Bantry Bay has a long history of mussel and salmon production.
It was interesting to learn how each location is chosen because of its unique natural conditions. Water depth, currents, temperature, salinity and protection from storms all influence which species can be successfully farmed. These conditions also help to maintain healthy stocks and produce high-quality seafood.
Teaching in Killybegs, I can clearly see the relevance of this topic. While Killybegs is best known for its fishing fleets, aquaculture is another important part of Ireland’s blue economy and provides employment in many coastal communities. Farms support not only those working directly in aquaculture but also transport companies, engineering firms, seafood processors and local businesses. Learning about the different locations around Ireland has given me a greater appreciation of how diverse the industry is and how each region contributes in its own way. I think sharing these examples with my students will help them understand that Ireland’s coastline is an incredibly valuable natural resource that supports both biodiversity and local livelihoods.

Taking a different perspective, I visit Glencolumcille every year and I see the importance of aquaculture in Donegal. Like you mentioned the opportunities that arise indirectly such as transport, engineering, local businesses etc cannot be overlooked, and in many cases keep smaller rural communities going. Again, I agree with you that children should be made aware of how incredibly lucky we are to have this valuable natural resources on our doorstep that supports biodiversity and livelihoods.

Module 2, Where Do We Farm?, really made me think about the role aquaculture plays in Ireland, especially in our coastal communities. I had never given much thought to why farms are located in certain places, but I now understand how important clean water, sheltered bays and the right environmental conditions are for growing healthy fish and shellfish. As a primary school teacher, I think this is a topic children would really enjoy learning about. I teach in the midlands and many children know the beach as a place to swim or collect shells, but they may not realise that it is also where many people work and earn a living especially as we are in the midlands. However learning about aquaculture is a great way to help pupils make connections between the sea, food production and the people who live in coastal areas.This module has given me ideas for bringing real-life learning into the classroom. It has reminded me that helping children understand and appreciate Ireland’s natural resources from a young age can encourage them to care for the environment and their local communities.

As mentioned in this module, the majority of the aquaculture farms are along the Wild Atlantic Way due to the climatic conditions. There are also some farms dotted along the remaining Irish coast such as Carlingford Lough and Bantry Bay.
Aquaculture farming is a way of life for some local communities, an integral part of their identities. In these communities, aquaculture connects families through the folklore of their fishing tales to the hardships of a labour intensive industry. A community’s cultural heritage is very strong in these areas where they can pull on the many elements of aquaculture farming experiences throughout the generations.
For example, aquaculture farming in Galway Bay has impacted various communities socially and economically. Firstly, the Galway International Oyster Festival is held annually drawing international visitors and promoting the tourism economy in Ireland. This festival is now in its 72nd year and is noted as the world’s longest running oyster festival. It is held in September to celebrate the start of the native oyster season.
Noting the point of native oysters, unfortunately Galway Bay’s stocks of native oysters have depleted in recent years and are currently working since 2017 on restoring them. The agencies in working on actively restoring the native oyster beds and reefs are Cuan Beo, Marine Institute, Bord Iascaigh Mhara, and the Clarinbridge Co-Op. The working of various groups together to reach a collective goal, highlights the social impact aquaculture can have.
An area of aquaculture farming not discussed too deeply in this module was seaweed harvesting. The Irish seaweed industry has also had great success in recent years, and impacting the local socio – economic industries. For example, taking into account the Sligo company, “VOYA”, it first used seaweed as retail seaweed baths that brought tourism to Strandhill, to now being a successful international brand.

I never thought of the Oyster Festival and I’ve been in Galway when it was on. I think the aquaculture can help meet the demand for oysters while allowing Galway Bay’s stocks to replenish.
I’ve visited VOYA in Strandhill and it was fantastic to see natural local resources being used. I dived a little deeper and apparently there has been controversy over licensing and large scale harvesting affecting the local environment. I think sustainability has been at the forefront of aquaculture and perhaps we’re not far enough along with seaweed in our regulations. We could end up with a situation similar to oysters where we have to allow it to replenish if we’re not careful with how much we allow to harvesting. The issuing of licenses is a good step here and they seem to be restrictive in providing them.

I can definitely relate to that. I was at the Galway International Oyster Festival myself when I was in college and, like many others, enjoyed a few oysters with a pint of Guinness! What really stood out to me was the number of tourists who had travelled to Galway for the festival. It showed just how important oysters are, not only as a local food product but also as a driver of tourism and the local economy. I agree that sustainable aquaculture has an important role to play in meeting demand while helping to protect and replenish natural oyster stocks in Galway Bay for future generations.

Aquaculture farms in Ireland seem be located all along the western coast from Donegal down as far as Kerry. There seems an abundance of bays, estuaries and fjords there where conditions are ideal for salmon, oysters and mussels. I recall the map from the model where those extremities in the west were unsuitable for anything else really. Being from the east, our land is seen as ideal for farming animals and for tillage. The more rugged western coast would not be as well suited to this and with the gulf stream, aquaculture seems to suit best.
The aquaculture farms provide a vital source of employment and provide economic benefit to many communities. Apart from direct jobs on these farms, indirect jobs in areas such as transport, tourism and processing are vital. One criticism that is always directed to our government is that when our country receives Foreign Direct Investment, it is usually situated in the east of the country while the south and west suffer. Here the natural environmental need for these farms is in the west and they provide vital sustainability to many communities.
A common theme in these farms is sustainability. It appears much thought and research has gone into choosing the locations of these farms. I think this would be an interesting teaching point for a senior class in giving them maps, tide times etc. and having them decide which location is most appropriate for salmon, oysters and mussels. -
Aquaculture farms are placed all along the West coast of Ireland. Being from Bantry I see first hand how these farms contribute greatly to the economy of the area. These businesses provide employment in rural areas where without it many young people would have to leave the local area in search of employment. They not only provide work to people working on the factory floors but to lab technicians, marketing experts, nutritionists, electrical engineers, lorry drivers, marine biologists, just to name a few.
Providing local shops and restaurants with fresh fish is good for tourism and provides more opportunities for employment. People travel from all over to sample the fresh fish produced in the aquaculture farms and local restaurants.
Making of most of our natural resources in a sustainable way is crucial for the growth and future success of these businesses which so many towns and communities in rural Ireland depend on. -

This module helped me develop a better understanding of where aquaculture farms are located in Ireland and the important role they play in supporting coastal communities. Many farms are based along the west coast, where the clean waters provide ideal conditions for farming certain species. Before completing this module, I had not fully appreciated the positive economic impact that aquaculture has on many rural communities.
Although I teach in Cong rather than on the coast, the topic is still relevant to my pupils. Many families are familiar with fishing on Lough Corrib, and it provides a good opportunity to compare inland and coastal industries. Aquaculture creates employment, supports local businesses and helps sustain communities that rely on the fishing.
In the classroom, I would encourage pupils to explore where aquaculture farms are located in Ireland and have them label these locations on a map. we could then investigate the species that are farmed in Irish coasts before discussing how sustainable practices benefit both people and the environment.

As a 6th Class teacher and a teacher whose school is focusing on stem for next year. I found the ARC online resources to be a good way of bringing STEM learning to life,. The activities encourage pupils to think critically and solve problematic concepts to real-world situations, which is particularly important for my senior class. I can see myself using these resources to support inquiry-based learning, where pupils work collaboratively to investigate, analyse results and communicate their findings.
The resources also provide excellent opportunities to integrate Science, Maths and Digital Technologies, while developing important skills such as teamwork and critical thinking. They align well with the STEM Education Policy Statement by promoting active, hands-on learning and encouraging pupils to become independent learners. From a School Self-Evaluation perspective and a school who are focusing on stem for next year. I think these resources could help create a consistent approach to STEM across the school, allowing teachers to build pupils’ skills progressively from the junior classes through to 6th Class. Overall, I believe they are a practical and engaging way to strengthen STEM learning.

Learning about aquaculture in Ireland so far in this course has helped me understand how important it is to many coastal communities. I knew that fish and shellfish were farmed in Ireland, but I did not fully appreciate the degree to which the industry contributes to local economies and people’s livelihoods. I learned that aquaculture farms are mainly located in coastal counties because these areas have clean waters and sheltered bays that provide ideal conditions for aquafarming.
What stood out to me most was the positive impact aquaculture has on rural communities. I realised that these farms create employment for local people in farming, transport, and other related businesses. They also support local shops, restaurants, and tourism, helping to keep small coastal communities going. It demonstrates how one industry can benefit many different people and businesses. Aquaculture is vital to many rural villages around Ireland. I myself have worked on oyster farms down in Cromane in Co.Kerry and I can say for a fact how much the aquaculture supports the locals here as well giving the people here a resource to draw from when it comes to festivals such as Seafest which is now held annually in September. It is without a doubt a pillar of the community.

I researched our local seafood farm Croagh Patrick Seafoods and I was lucky enough to visit recently, it is a very good model of aquaculture combined with tourism. Croagh Patrick Seafoods is a family oyster farm on the shores of Clew bay near Westport. The family lead a fascinating shore based tour of the oyster beds followed by an oyster shucking demonstration and tutored tasting.
the tour goes in to the world of oyster farming , from tiny seed to mature shellfish in the pristine waters. The Seafood business is part of BIMs Taste the Atlantic Trail celebrating Irish seafood. I found hearing about the tradition of oyster cultivation so interesting and how you can grade oysters from seed to table. I really enjoyed hand picking and shucking the oysters and of course enjoying tasting them with homemade brown bread at the end of the tour. They also farm mussels and clams . They supply local cafes and restaurants and you can also supply hampers to order. There has been investment in the business which comes from BIM and the government . This is great to see and the day I was there, there were lots of Europeans and Americans enjoying the tour and sampling the oysters. It really was gratifying to see how a family business can make a living from aquaculture and provide employment. it is also really good to see how the business can be enhanced through tourism which can provide other income streams to invest back in the business while also educating the general public about aquaculture, shellfish farming, marine biology etc. a win win in my books!-

I really enjoyed this module. I learned so much . I now have a bettter understanding of why these farms are located in particular areas and how important they are to the local communities. Living in a rural coastal area myself I can see the positive impact that the industry has on the local economy and on the people who depend on it. In areas such as Killybegs in Donegal, marine-based industries provide opportunities that may not otherwise be available in smaller rural towns. Without these industries many young people would leave to find work somewhere else in cities or emigrate. Aquaculture helps to create employment and supports other local businesses connected to the sector. Aquaculture also helps to preserve the strong traditions and cultural connection that Irish coastal communities have with the sea. It shows how communities can use their natural environment in a sustainable way to support economic development. Before starting this module, I honestly didn’t know much about aquaculture or why farms are located in certain parts of Ireland. I now understand that they need clean, sheltered waters where fish and shellfish can grow well. It also made me realise just how important the sea is for many people living in coastal communities.
I live in Bandon, so I’m only a short drive from Kinsale and often go there with family and friends. Growing up, I used to go fishing with my dad from the rocks near the Old Head of Kinsale Golf Course. I always loved being by the sea, but I never really thought about how many people make a living from it until I completed this module.
Aquaculture provides jobs in fish farming, seafood processing, transport and tourism. It also helps support local cafés, restaurants and shops, as people visit coastal towns to enjoy fresh seafood and the beautiful scenery. I think it’s great that it can help keep these communities thriving while also producing food in a sustainable way.
As a primary school teacher, I think it’s important that children learn about topics like this. Many of the children I teach in Cork City don’t get many chances to visit the coast, so bringing these lessons into the classroom is a great way to help them learn about the sea. It can also encourage them to care for the environment and understand why our coastal communities are so important.

I agree that its important that children learn about aquaculture and the role it plays in Ireland’s economy and environment. After completing this module, I think the map plotting activity would work really well with my 5th class. It would fit nicely into our Geography lessons while also reinforcing maths skills like using coordinates, grid references and interpreting maps.Being based in County Kerry, I’d use local examples to make the lesson more meaningful. I’d ask the pupils to locate aquaculture sites around places such as Dingle Bay, Kenmare Bay and Fenit before comparing them with sites in other parts of Ireland. I think children enjoy learning about places they know, and it helps them see the connection between what they’re learning in school and the world around them.
I’d also encourage plenty of discussion about why these farms are located where they are and what physical features make them suitable. It would be a nice opportunity to link Geography, Maths and Science together. I could even extend the lesson by having pupils create their own map or research a local aquaculture site as a follow-up activity.

As mentioned aquaculture farms requires specific areas suitable for species requirements. Living in Galway, I understand the importance of aquaculture farms for smaller, more rural communities that may lack other opportunities for employment. Galway thrives due to it’s proximity to the ocean and undoubtedly these aquaculture farms provides an abundance of employment for local people in fish farming, processing, packaging, transport, and tourism. Beneficially, Galway has a popular seafood industry which attracts huge amounts tourists who are interested in local food, scenery, culture and marine activities. As a result, small businesses, restaurants and families in these smaller coastal towns such as Clifden, Roundstone, Kinvara benefit from this and money is circulated back into the local economy. Additionally, I would like to make reference to the huge emphasis put on ‘The Wild Atlantic Way’ and how this phrase is known worldwide for it’s food, scenery, culture and uniqueness. Aquaculture farms are located along this route all along the coast and locals are proud to be able to represent their small communities and putting local foods on the map.

Although I live in an inland county and I have limited first hand knowledge of aquaculture. Module 2 has helped me understand its importance in Ireland.
Aquaculture farms are mainly located along Ireland’s coastline. This is where is most suitable for farming mussels, fish, oysters and other seafood.
The farms provide high quality food for Irish customers and for export markets. They provide employment in communities and also support local businesses. Learning about these farms has shown me how influential geography, climate and access to the sea are for the industry.
Mapping activities allow children to develop practical skills and also allow them to learn about this important industry. I feel this topic would link to Maths and Geography allowing for Cross- curricular learning. Although my personal experience is limited on this topic, this module has broadened my understanding and given me ideas for classroom activities.-

I was interested to learn that aquaculture can provide employment and support local businesses in coastal areas.

It can provide jobs for people living in coastal communities and support other businesses such as transport, equipment suppliers, food producers and local shops. It can also help to maintain communities where employment opportunities may be limited.
I think this would be an interesting topic to explore with pupils in the classroom. Using maps, photographs and videos, pupils could identify where aquaculture takes place in Ireland and investigate why certain locations are suitable. They could also discuss how aquaculture can benefit local communities while considering its impact on the environment. This would link well with Geography, SESE and learning about sustainability.

This module helped me understand more about why aquaculture farms are located in particular areas and the important role they can play in coastal communities. I found it interesting to see how aquaculture can provide employment and support local businesses and industries.
My school is located close to a large port and the sea, so I think this would be particularly relevant to explore with my pupils. Even with infants, we could investigate what happens at our local port, who works there and how people use the sea. This could lead into exploring aquaculture and the different jobs connected to the industry.
I think this would help children understand that the sea is not only a place for recreation, but is also an important part of the local economy. It would also help them develop an awareness of their local environment and how communities depend on the sea.

Firstly, I must admit that I had very little knowledge of Ireland’s agricultural conditions before completing this module, so I found the map highlighting the areas of successful agriculture particularly interesting. I also really enjoyed the explanation of Ireland’s ‘Goldilocks’ weather and how our climate provides such favourable conditions for agriculture. As I look out my window and contemplate the best time to put the bedsheets out on the line, the idea certainly made me smile! It was an explanation that I shared with my husband and children, which showed me how easily this learning can extend beyond the classroom and into everyday life.
I was fascinated to learn that farming on land may become increasingly limited and that only 1–2% of the world’s oceans are currently used for aquaculture. This highlighted the significant potential for sustainable growth within the aquaculture industry. I was particularly interested to learn about the suitability of Ireland’s west coast for aquaculture and was delighted to see Carlingford highlighted on the map, as it is relatively close to where I teach on the east coast.
I feel that aquaculture is an area that is not widely understood by many pupils or teachers, despite its importance to Ireland’s coastal communities. Learning more about it has made me realise the importance of introducing pupils to sustainable food production and the role aquaculture can play in supporting local economies and communities. It has certainly given me ideas that I can bring back to my classroom and share with my students.

Learning about where aquaculture farms are located around Ireland made me realise how important the coastline is to the industry. Before this module, I had never really thought about why certain areas are more suitable for aquaculture than others. The west, southwest and northwest have many coastal areas where the sea conditions allow different types of farming to take place. It was interesting to see how the natural environment can influence the type of aquaculture that can be developed in an area.
I was also interested in the wider impact that aquaculture can have on people living in coastal communities. It is not only the people working directly on the farms who benefit. There are also opportunities for local shops, suppliers, restaurants, transport companies and other businesses that depend on activity within these communities. This can be especially important in smaller areas where employment opportunities may be more limited.
As someone living and working in Maynooth, I think I had taken the connection between Ireland and the sea for granted. This topic has made me realise that aquaculture can help keep coastal communities active and provide opportunities for people to remain and work locally. However, I also think it is important that development is balanced with protecting the marine environment. Overall, I now have a much better understanding of how aquaculture can connect food production, employment and the sustainability of coastal communities.

As you mentioned living inland, I think its important to mention how important aquaculture can be for those who do not have easy access to the coast. Ireland has multiple freshwater aquaculture sites, an example of these is Goatsbridge Trout Farm in Kilkenny and Mount Lucas Aquaculture Site. These may be worth mentioning to your students if you explore this topic in the class.

Before starting this course and getting an understanding of aquaculture, I had not really considered the impact of these farms on Ireland’s coastal communities.
Ireland being an island, has a long coastline and many sheltered bays, sea loughs and inshore waters. These provide suitable conditions for aquaculture. Farms are often located close to coastal communities where the local environment and water conditions are suitable for producing species such as salmon, mussels and oysters.
Aquaculture makes an important socio-economic contribution to these communities in many ways. It can provide local employment and support other businesses, including boat operators, equipment suppliers, transport companies and local shops and services. This can be particularly valuable in rural coastal areas where there may be fewer employment opportunities. Aquaculture can also help maintain connections between communities and the sea by supporting traditional knowledge and livelihoods.
However, on the flipside its location can sometimes create concerns about the environment, tourism or other users of coastal waters.I think the balance of economic development and environmental protection is very important. Overall, I think well-managed aquaculture can provide valuable opportunities for Ireland’s coastal communities while helping to keep these communities connected to the marine environment. -

Aquaculture farms are located along Ireland’s coastline, in bays, inlets and along the shoreline. This is particularly true in the west but some farms are also found in the east. The cooler summer water and warmer winter water, thanks to the Gulf Stream and North Atlantic drift, make these locations ideal for fishing. Consequently, the placement of fisheries and harbours around Ireland significantly contributes to the economic well-being of coastal communities. Beyond the jobs created in the fisheries, it benefits restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, service stations, hotels and the accommodation sector. The positive impact on these communities is far-reaching, affecting people’s livelihoods and fostering a sense of community where everyone contributes.

Part 1: I would introduce the lesson by asking the children what they know about aquaculture and where they think fish and shellfish farms might be found in Ireland. We would look at a map of Ireland and discuss why certain coastal areas are suitable, considering things like water quality, shelter, tides and access to the sea.
The children would then work in pairs to plot a number of aquaculture farms on a map using coordinates/grid references. They would use the map scale to work out the approximate distance between different locations and use compass directions to describe where the farms are located.
As a follow-up activity, the children could choose a suitable location for their own imaginary aquaculture farm and explain why they chose it.
This lesson would link nicely with Geography through map skills, Maths through coordinates, scale and distance, and Science through habitats and marine environments. It would also give the children an opportunity to see how these subjects connect to a real-life industry in Ireland.
Part 2:I found it interesting to learn more about where aquaculture farms are located around Ireland and the reasons why certain areas are suitable. Factors such as water quality, shelter, tides and access to the sea all play a part. I also hadn’t really considered how important aquaculture can be to coastal communities, providing jobs and supporting local businesses.
I can see lots of ways to bring this topic into my class. The children could use maps of Ireland to locate different aquaculture farms and develop their skills in using grid references, coordinates, scale and directions. They could also investigate why certain locations are suitable for fish or shellfish farming.
As I am teaching in Kerry, I think it would be particularly useful to link the topic to our local coastline and marine environment. This would make the learning more meaningful for the children and show them how Geography, Science and Maths can be connected to a real-life industry happening around them.

I am also from Kerry and I would highly recommend speaking to the pupils about the oyster farms down in Cromane! The aquaculture sites down there support the entire community and it can be seen in so many different ways I.e, Jacks restaurant, Seafest, how many of the companies financially support the GAA community etc.

I found the map plotting activity interesting, although I would definitely need to simplify it for the younger children I teach. I liked the idea of using satellite images on the interactive whiteboard and asking the children to identify things they recognise such as the sea, beaches, harbours, islands and rivers. I would probably start with Dublin, as this is familiar to them, and then move across the map to the west coast. We could compare the two areas and talk about some of the differences we notice.
I particularly liked the idea of using the letters F, M and O to decide where a fish, mussel or oyster farm could go. For junior children, I would make this even more visual by using pictures of the different species and letting the children place them on a large map or on the interactive whiteboard. I think this would be a simple and enjoyable way of introducing early map skills and positional language, while also making links with Geography, Maths and Science.<span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>Assignment 2</span>
Growing up in Mayo, I was always familiar with the sea and with small coastal towns and villages, but I don’t think I ever really considered the importance of aquaculture to these communities. This module made me look at the west coast a little differently and think about why aquaculture is so well suited to these areas. The sheltered bays, inlets and coastline along the west provide the right conditions for different types of aquaculture.
I now teach children in Dublin West, so I think there is a nice opportunity here to use the topic to compare different parts of Ireland and the types of work associated with them. The children are very familiar with an urban environment, so looking at life and employment in a small coastal community would be quite a different experience for them.
What I found particularly interesting was that aquaculture isn’t just about the people working directly on a fish or shellfish farm. It can have a much wider effect on a community by providing employment and supporting local families and businesses. The course material highlights the close connection between Ireland’s coastal areas, the people who live there and the economic activity taking place along the coast.
For me, this would be a good way of helping younger children begin to understand that where we live can influence how we live and work, and that life in different parts of Ireland can look very different. -

I always assumed that many of these farms would be along the west coast, but I had not fully considered how factors such as the shape and geography of the coastline, sheltered bays and Ireland’s climate influence the suitability of different locations and the species that can be successfully farmed there. I am always interested in finding ways to bring new learning back into the classroom and use it in meaningful and authentic ways. I can see strong links between aquaculture and a range of curriculum areas, including Geography, Science and STEM. However, it was the mapping activity that particularly stood out to me. Rather than simply telling children where aquaculture farms are located, they could investigate maps, develop their own questions, make predictions, explore different possibilities and use evidence to support their conclusions. My biggest takeaway from learning about aquaculture has been the sectors that rely heavily on it. It provides job opportunities for many people. This includes people working on farms, trawlers, processing, transport, tourism and hospitality. It is a vital cog in supporting local businesses, especially those in coastal regions. It also keeps coastal communities active because without it there would be very little opportunities. Galway for example thrives on tourism and is also famous for its fresh sea food so it is vital the links between coastal regions remain strong in order for everything to run efficiently.
It is important for children to learn about aquaculture because it helps them understand where food comes from. It shows the start and finish point and that it’s a chain that needs to operate in tandem. It also encourages them think about the importance of supporting locally sourced produce and local vendors.

Very true, Shane. So many children have no idea where their food comes from. Most might think of it coming from a local supermarket chain or from a packet in a freezer. Having them think back to where it originally came from, they might appreciate the effort it took to get their food from land or sea farm to fork.

I found this topic interesting because I had some personal experience of seeing aquaculture farms when I was younger. As a child, I would have visited Donegal a lot with my family, and I remember seeing some of the farms along the coast. At the time, I did not really understand what they were or how important they could be to local communities. Learning about aquaculture now has made me look at them in a different way.

Furthermore, indirect employment flourishes through local transportation, seafood processing, equipment repair, tourism, and hospitality. Before completing this module, I did not fully understand why aquaculture farms are mainly located along Ireland’s western coastline. This area has many sheltered bays, inlets and shorelines that protect farms from the full force of the Atlantic Ocean. Different coastal features also suit different species. For example, salmon need deep water and strong currents, mussels grow well in deep water with gentler currents, while oysters are farmed in sheltered intertidal areas.

This module has helped me recognise that aquaculture is not only about food production; it also plays an important role in sustaining the social and economic life of rural coastal communities.

Being an island off the Atlantic, much of the west of Ireland, including areas of Kerry and Galway as only 2 examples, has huge opportunities to be engaged with aquaculture in all its forms. Employment as a result of this aquaculture is vital to local economies, towns and villages along the west coast. Being on the east coast here, from a Mathematical perspective, the children could investigate things such as the travel time from their school to a specific place on the Atlantic coast e.g. Galway, Kerry or up to the likes of Killybegs. They could work out the best mode of transport to get there, the potential cost of getting there or maybe they could compare the geographical and topographical make up of a coastal region. They could also compare weather forecasts and temperatures for their area with a town on the coast, and perhaps even compare timings of sunrise and sunset, high and low tides etc. There are many possibilities. In areas where there are aquaculture farms, the community around them will be key to the survival of the farm too. If people are working at such a farm, they are going to need homes, shops, transportation, health facilities, maybe factories to take the produce on to other regions etc. All of these depend on the aquaculture farm being sustainable and working correctly and efficiently.

My Dad hails from Doonbeg, which is home to a major regional processing facility for</span> <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>CS Fish, a prominent wholesale seafood supplier. The fish which is farmed in Quilty and Carrighoholt, is processed in Doonbeg and sold to shops all around the county of Clare, along to many restaurants nationwide. This provides income and employment for the local areas. Clare is also part of the FLAG West coastal development area, where aquaculture and fishing are important parts od the local economy. Something that I find interesting is that local oyster producers also work together to maintain the coastline through clean-up initiatives. This shows that aquaculture can help not only economically but to the social wellbeing and environmental factor of coastal areas.</span>

Before doing this course, I did not know very much about aquaculture farms in Ireland or where they were located. I was surprised to learn that there are many aquaculture farms along the Irish coastline, especially on the west and south coasts. These areas are well suited to farming fish and shellfish such as salmon, mussels and oysters.
I now understand how important these farms can be for small coastal communities. They provide jobs for local people and bring money into the area. They also support other local businesses and help people to continue living and working in rural areas. Aquaculture is also an important way of producing food here in Ireland.
The course has made me think more about where the fish and shellfish we eat actually comes from. Since learning more about aquaculture, I have even started buying and eating more fish and shellfish myself. I also think it is very important that aquaculture farms look after the sea and the environment around them.

Aquaculture farms are predominately on the western coast of Ireland. The shoreline with its many inlets and bays gives shelter necessary for aquaculture. I am originally from West Cork and fishing and aquaculture would be a very important industry there. Aquaculture contributes to communities by providing employment for many, it is a way of life for people who grew up fishing. Aquaculture and fishing provides an essential food source, both for locals and for distribution nationwide. Aquaculture creates interest and enthusiasm around sea life in an area and it can be a springboard for tourism to see fish farms, creating food trails or food innovation.
There is a huge emphasis on food now with fresh food and Irish food being celebrated on a national level. This has led to an increase in events such as food festivals, farmers’ markets are very popular and food trails for tourism. It is lovely to see Irish sea life and aquaculture being celebrated like this. The impact on the community is huge, from the fisherman to the child sitting at the table, aquaculture has an effect on us all. -

Before completing this module, I did not know very much about where aquaculture farms are located in Ireland or about the contribution they make to local communities. Coming from the Midlands, I am much more familiar with agriculture and traditional farming, so I found it interesting to learn about another important part of Irish food production.
Aquaculture farms are mainly located around Ireland’s coastline, where suitable environmental conditions allow fish and shellfish to be farmed. What stood out to me most was the important role these farms can play in supporting coastal and rural communities. They can provide direct employment in farming and harvesting, while also creating work in processing, transport, maintenance, equipment supply and other related services. In areas where employment opportunities may be limited, this can make a real difference to local families and can help people remain living and working in their own communities.
I also think aquaculture can contribute to the wider economy by supporting Irish food production and creating products for both the domestic and export markets. At the same time, it is important that aquaculture develops in a sustainable way, with consideration given to water quality, marine habitats and the long-term health of the environment.
From a teaching perspective, I think this would be a very worthwhile topic to explore in the primary classroom. It could help children understand that Irish farming is not limited to land-based agriculture and would provide opportunities to discuss sustainability, employment, coastal communities and the relationship between people and the environment. It could also be linked naturally with Geography, Science, Maths and SPHE.-

By strategically placing aquafarms at different seapoi8nts around the country, we are opening up opportunities to the locals of that area. It has been reported that traditional fishing methods have seen a decline in return for both the fishermen and they consumers, so by creating these farming hubs, you are able to manage and organise the fishing. These fishing operations means that there are year round jobs available for the local people and therefore it supports the local community, keep families settled and together and in turn has a knock on positive effect on local businesses, schools and infrastructure in the area. The coastal residents are therefore given a responsibility to protect the integrity and management of these initiatives, which helps to sustain the marine ecosystem. These initiatives help to bridge the gap between traditional fishing and a new and efficient future of aquaculture.

When I was on holiday recently in Achill, I saw up close the wild Atlantic salmon farms that are located in Clew Bay between Achill and Clare Island when we went out on a sea safari trip with our tour guide, Peter. He told us that in each of the salmon farm pens, there are between 50,000 and 100,000 salmon and that each pen was worth approximately €3 million. Ireland’s long coastline, numerous sheltered bays and clean marine waters provide very favourable conditions for aquaculture. Factors such as water quality, shelter from strong waves, suitable seabed conditions, access to transport infrastructure and proximity to local communities all influence where farms can operate. Aquaculture is particularly prominent in areas such as Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Kerry, Cork and Waterford, with significant activity concentrated around bays including Bantry Bay, Clew Bay, Dingle Bay, Donegal Bay, Kenmare Bay and Kilkieran Bay.
I think the location of fish farms is especially significant because many of Ireland’s coastal communities are relatively remote and have fewer employment opportunities than larger urban centres. Family-run farms can provide opportunities for people to remain in their local area rather than having to move elsewhere for employment. Aquaculture can therefore provide an important source of local employment and help maintain economic activity within communities that might otherwise experience population decline. According to An Bórd Iascaigh Mhara, in 2024, Irish aquaculture produced more than 38,000 tonnes of seafood, generated approximately €210 million in sales and contributed €73 million in Gross Value Added to the Irish economy. The sector directly employed 1,835 people, with many of these jobs located in coastal and rural communities. The socio-economic benefits to many coastal communities around Ireland are enormous. -

Assignment 1.
I feel the map plotting activity would most suitable for 4th class and up. It ties in well with local History and Geography learning while also developing important Mathematical skills, including using coordinates, spatial awareness etc.
I would use examples from County Sligo to make the lesson more relevant and local for my students. The class could talk about possible aquaculture sites around Sligo Bay, Drumcliff and other coastal areas near Sligo, we could also talk about a local fish farm which plays a key role in the initial phase of fish based aquaculture. Familiar locations help the children connect their lived experiences with learning in the classroom.
As an extension activity, the pupils could design their own maps showing suitable locations for aquaculture or carry out research on a local site in County Sligo. They could then present their findings to the class, explaining the location they selected and the reasons why it would be appropriate. This would further develop their research, map-reading and communication skills.
Assignment 2
Aquaculture contributes to local economies in a variety of ways. It creates employment in fish farming, seafood processing, transport and other related businesses. The availability of fresh, locally produced seafood also benefits restaurants and supports tourism in coastal areas. This has helped me recognise that aquaculture is about more than food production; it plays an important part in sustaining communities and providing valuable opportunities for local people. Learning about the distribution of aquaculture farms in Ireland has given me a deeper appreciation of how closely the industry is connected to coastal life. Many of these farms are located along the west and southwest coasts, where sheltered bays and clean, suitable waters provide ideal conditions for raising fish and shellfish.

I was not aware that aquaculture was present mainly in the western coast. As part of learning and teaching about Ireland, I think that this would be something that would be very important to include in lessons. Many people are aware of Ireland as an agricultural stronghold but I think that it is important to have an awareness of other industries that benefit smaller communities. These could easily slot into Geography lessons about landscape features. For examples glaciers etc could be linked to Killary Fjord. Tides is also something that the children will more than likely have experienced in their everyday lives and I could create lessons to build on this knowledge. Having come from an agricultural background, I am aware of the factors that limit/benefit farming productivity. It was very interesting to view this in relation to aquaculture and get an introduction to the correct language. I was previously unaware of the products of aquaculture that were farmed and produced in Ireland.

I also recognise the important social and cultural contribution of aquaculture. Providing employment can help people remain living and working locally and support communities with strong maritime traditions. However, aquaculture must maintain positive relationships with local residents, fishermen, tourism interests and other marine users. Responsible development, environmental monitoring and communication are essential.
Overall, I now see aquaculture is closely connected to the economic and social wellbeing of coastal communities. Its future development should balance employment and economic benefits with environmental protection and community interests.

For example, oyster farming in Cromane would be a tradition practiced by generations of families and is a great way for people to connect their work to their love of the sea. ‘Seafest’ is now held anyway down there (a festival celebrating the sea) and it has brought so much excitement and vitality to this little corner of Kerry.

I grew up on Achill island . As a child I ate wild salmon and other fish caught off the island and didn’t think about it. Now the only salmon we can buy is farmed and it is next to impossible to buy locally caught fish. The local SuperValu sells fish that travels overnight from the east coast. Hotels and restaurants have to buy fish from Killybegs or worse from big delivery companies . It saddens me deeply that what was once an organic industry where fish were caught according to the season is now managed to the extent where salmon in its farmed form is barely recognisable from its wild predecessor . Turbot is the same. Yes aquaculture provides employment and food but at what cost ? Surely if we are serious about protecting our natural environment on and off the land we need to return to local food eaten locally and not mass production of certain species at the expense of others . We once had small boats fishing off our coasts supplying their localities . The cost of licenses made many of these people give up and get a job on a fish farm. Surely the former was a more sustainable and healthier existence ?

As I am from Tipperary, I would not have known a great deal about coastal fishing or aquaculture before doing this course. I found it interesting to learn that many of Ireland’s aquaculture farms are located along the west, southwest and northwest coasts. These areas have clean water, sheltered bays and good conditions for farming salmon, mussels, oysters and other shellfish.
I can now see how important aquaculture is for many coastal communities. Some of these areas are quite remote and may not have as many job opportunities, so aquaculture can provide important employment and support local businesses. It can also help keep people living and working in these communities and support traditional skills and ways of life.
I think it is important that aquaculture is carried out in a responsible and sustainable way. The environment and marine life need to be protected while also supporting local communities and the economy. From what I have learned, aquaculture can be very beneficial to Ireland’s coastal communities when it is managed carefully and with the environment in mind.

The west coast of Ireland is famous for its stunning, rugged scenery but that same beauty makes life pretty challenging for traditional farmers. When you look at the rocky mountains and poor soil in these remote areas, it is easy to see why farming on land is so difficult. However these exact conditions are what make the coastline a perfect spot for aquaculture. By moving from the fields to the sea local communities have found a way to thrive in places where other industries might struggle.Most of these fish farms are tuckesd away in sheltered bays and inlets along the Atlantic. These spots offer a bit of a ‘Goldilocks zone’ because the water stays mild thanks to the Gulf Stream rarely hitting extreme temperatures. Whether it is salmon in the deeper, faster currents or oysters on the flat tidal shorelines, the geography of the coast dictates what can be grown and where. In places like Killary Fjord, which is Ireland’s only fjord, the deep, sheltered water provides a unique environment that was carves out by glaciers thousands of years ago.
Beyond just being a source of food, these farms are the backbone of many coastal towns. They provide much-needed jobs both directly on the farms and indirectly in the local ecomomy. In many of these remote western regions, aquaculture is actually the main type of farming, helping to keep small communities alive and vibrant. It is more than just an industry; it is a vital part of the social and economic wellbeing of the country, linking the people of Ireland to the sea that surrounds them.

This module helped me understand why the location of aquaculture farms is so important. I learned that aquaculture in Ireland is mainly found along the western Atlantic coastline, particularly in bays, inlets and sheltered shoreline areas. These locations give protection from the full force of the Atlantic, while different coastal features suit different species. For example, salmon need deeper water and stronger currents, while oysters are more suited to intertidal areas and sheltered shorelines.
What stood out to me most was how closely aquaculture is connected to the life of coastal communities. The coastline is not only a natural environment but also an important economic resource, and many local communities depend on activities linked to the sea. Aquaculture can provide local employment and also support other work connected with transport, equipment, food businesses and services. This can be especially valuable in rural coastal areas where other types of farming may be difficult because of mountainous land and poor soil.
In my school, I think this topic could help pupils understand the connection between the environment, people and work. Using photographs, simple maps and sensory activities, pupils could explore how the sea supports both wildlife and local communities. This module has made me realise that aquaculture is not just about producing seafood; it can also help coastal communities remain active, economically supported and connected to their local environment. -
The location of aquaculture farms is largely along the western, Atlantic coastline of Ireland, in bays, inlets, and on the shoreline. The course material here also informed us that they are in sheltered from the full force of the Atlantic. The context of their location highlights their great significance in terms of employment particularly for the people in these regions. While there have been and continue to be advances technologically regarding remote working etc., transport and distance still mean that the availability of continuous employment, particularly beyond seasonal work is still a challenge in many of these areas. Aquaculture provides steadily in this regard and has so much to offer socio-economically beyond the obvious and direct means.
The aquaculture farms by the very virtue of their location alone undoubtedly have so very much to contribute socio-economically to coastal communities, in both direct and in indirect ways. Their presence pertains to the continued focus on efforts to retain and promote Irish heritage and culture also. -

The west coast provides the ideal conditions and climatic factors for fish production and the fish production provides much needed employment. Most of the landscape along the Atlantic is dominated by mountains, therefore is not suitable for most agriculture however the natural features of the shoreline are ideal for fish production. Learning about the location of aquaculture farms in Ireland has made me realise how closely the industry is connected to coastal communities. Aquaculture farms are mainly located along Ireland’s coastline because they depend on suitable marine environments. Salmon farming is particularly important along the west coast, from Donegal to Cork, while mussel and oyster farming is common in sheltered bays, estuaries and loughs.
Reflecting on this, I can see that aquaculture provides more than just food production. It creates employment and supports local businesses such as boat operators, processors, equipment suppliers and transport companies. In 2024, Irish aquaculture supported approximately 1,835 direct jobs and generated €210 million in sales, showing its importance to rural and coastal economies.
I also recognise that the benefits are not equal everywhere and that environmental pressures, competition for marine space and changing market conditions can affect communities. Overall, learning about aquaculture has helped me appreciate how the industry can support employment, local income and the long-term sustainability of Ireland’s coastal communities, while also highlighting the importance of responsible development. -
The majority of aquaculture farms are along the West Coast and the Wild Atlantic Way. Of course the land in these parts of the country are a lot less fertile and are less economically viable than other parts of Ireland so having aquaculture to boost the economy through employment, supply of food to local businesses and attracting tourism is hugely important. Many of these aquaculture farms are found in inlets and sheltered bays along the coast and provide a lot of employment for local communities.
Due to the fact that my own school is just minutes from the coast I feel that this is an amazing opportunity to teach these topics using the coastline as a living classroom. In order to develop a lesson based on aquaculture I would choose one particular area, for example mussle farming, I would invite some local fishermen from the locality to talk to the children and explain their work to them or a day in the life of a fisherman. I think that visitng the shoreline and investigating the different creatures there would be a brilliant avenue into aquaculture . -
This module made me think more about the location of aquaculture farms around Ireland and the important role they can play in coastal communities. As a 3rd and 4th Class teacher in Co. Donegal, I am particularly interested in the opportunities aquaculture could provide for learning about our own county. Although Lifford is inland, Donegal has a long coastline and many coastal communities where fishing and marine-related industries are an important part of local life.
I was interested to learn how the location of aquaculture farms is influenced by factors such as water quality, sheltered waters and suitable environmental conditions. It also made me think about the wider socio-economic benefits. Aquaculture can provide employment and support local businesses and families, while also contributing to the economy of coastal communities.
I think this would be a great topic to explore with my pupils through Geography and Science. We could look at a map of Donegal, identify coastal communities and investigate how aquaculture and other marine industries support them. This would help children make a connection between what they learn in the classroom and the communities and environment around them.
