This course is designed to introduce teachers to Google Workspace for Education and to develop their understanding of how Gemini AI and related digital tools can support teaching, learning and assessment in primary school contexts.
By exploring the use of familiar tools such as Google Docs, Slides, Forms and Classroom, alongside AI supported features such as Gemini and NotebookLM, teachers will gain greater confidence in using digital technologies to support planning, organisation‑ and classroom practice.
Throughout the course, teachers will learn how AI supported tools can assist with lesson preparation, differentiation and assessment for learning, while maintaining teacher professional judgement at all times. The course also supports teachers in planning for effective digital practice using the Digital Learning Framework and in considering how ‑ approaches can be embedded in a sustainable way within classroom and school planning.
Ethical considerations, including accuracy, bias, safeguarding and data protection, are explored throughout the course, supporting responsible and appropriate use of AI tools in line with school policy and Department guidance.
Who Is This Course For
This course is suitable for primary teachers (1st–6th class) and will also be relevant for teachers with responsibility for digital learning, STEE, assessment or School Self Evaluation (SSE) at school level.
No prior experience with AI is required. The course builds on teachers’ existing familiarity with Google Workspace tools commonly used in schools.
Technical Requirements
All our courses require broadband internet access. Participants need to be familiar with using the internet, downloading and installing software, and accessing online learning platforms.
Access to Google Workspace for Education will be required in order to engage fully with course activities.
Course Objectives
Participants will:
- Develop an understanding of Google Workspace for Education and Gemini AI, and their potential applications in the primary classroom.
- Identify opportunities for integrating digital and AI supported tools into teaching, learning and assessment, including STEE ‑related contexts‑.
- Build skills and confidence in using Google Workspace tools to support planning, differentiation, pupil engagement and assessment for learning.
- Explore ethical considerations involved in the use of AI in education and evaluate the responsible and appropriate use of AI supported tools‑.
- Consider the impact of AI and digital technologies on future practice in schools, including digital planning, policy development and School Self Evaluation‑.
Expected Outcomes
On completion of this course, participants will:
- Understand key concepts and terminology associated with AI and digital technologies in education.
- Develop an informed awareness of ethical considerations related to AI use, and be able to identify benefits and limitations within a primary school context.
- Explore examples of AI supported digital tools and identify age appropriate‑ and curriculum‑aligned resources, including those relevant to STEE.‑ resources, including those relevant to STEE
- Explore practical approaches for integrating digital and AI supported tools into existing lessons‑.
- Develop a clearer understanding of the teacher competences required to support effective digital learning and planning using the Digital Learning Framework.
Course Duration
Delivered fully online, this course can be taken anytime between July 1st and August 21st, 2026.
Participants are required to engage meaningfully with online content for approximately 20 hours. Participation and engagement with course content will be primarily judged on the quality of contributions to activities and reflections. An attendance roll will be maintained, along with a log of time spent working online, in line with summer course requirements.
