Natural Numbers and Integers

Junior Cycle» Maths

Project Type:

Overview

The project uses a combination of Flash and HTML to provide an interactive introduction to natural numbers and integers. It also makes use of a number of exercises and games written in Flash to reinforce the understanding of the concepts covered. There are also a number of PDF work sheets that can be downloaded and printed for use offline. The site makes use of interactive material to aid students in their understanding of Natural Numbers and Integers. It uses an interactive number line to allow students to experiment with what happens when we add, subtract, multiply and divide positive and negative numbers. It also uses online exercises and games to vary the teaching/learning method so as to help maintain a students' natural interest and motivation. To help keep students interested it is useful to move back and forth between the use of the site as a presentation tool in a whole class teaching situation and the individual use of the site by students. The worksheets can be used either for homework or as a class time activity.

Curriculum Addressed

First year Junior Certificate - may also be used for revision or remedial help for older students.

Objectives

In both the Natural Number and Integer sections there are accompanying worksheets that can be downloaded and/or printed for use by students to practice and reinforce their understanding of the concepts explained. In the integer section there are online exercises and games for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division so to get the full benefit of these each student will need time on the computer by themselves. While the use of a computer can be a motivating factor for getting the students involved in the material it is essential that the teacher is available to give added explanation, encouragement, feedback and direction.
