This module provides the teacher with the resources to cover at least twenty five classes dealing with Income, Expenditure, Budgeting, Credit, Credit Cards, Debt, Hire Purchase, Buying a House, Savings, Pensions, Investments, Banks, Insurance and Taxation. Students are expected to complete a workbook throughout their study of the module. This complete workbook can be downloaded at Workbook or alternatively the relative section for a particular lesson can be obtained by clicking Downloads at the top of this page and at the end of the Downloads page is a section called Alternatives to the Workbook. Throughout the module the students are asked to take account of their finances now, their finances one year after commencing work and ten years after commencing work. The module is aimed at a mixed ability class, but individual teachers will have to adjust the material to the level of their own classes, by for example cutting the number of questions covered in class and adjusting the time allocated to the module.

Lesson 2

Income 2

To enable students, to investigate, what their income will be 1 year after commencing work and 10 years after commencing work.

Students with the help of the Internet complete Pages 5 - 6 of the workbook. As a conclusion to the class the teacher discusses the idea of what students discovered about their future incomes, surprises and disappointments.

Lesson 3

Expenditure 1

To introduce students to the concept of expenditure.

Expenditure is introduced with the help of the PowerPoint Presentation Expenditure.

Lesson 4

Expenditure 2

To enable students to see their need for money both now and in the future. This lesson will see them investigate the price of financing a car and then having to make a realistic choice of the type of car they will have one year after they commence work.

Students first complete the quiz on income and expenditure, as an evaluation of what they have learned so far. This can be done on line by clicking opposite.

Students with the help of the Internet complete pages 9 - 10 of the workbook. Each student will have a different learning experience.

Lesson 5

Expenditure 3

To continue to enable students to see their need for money. This section will see them investigate the cost of preparing a meal and then the cost of their weekly shopping, plus the cost of renting an apartment.

Students with the help of the Internet will complete pages 11 - 12 of the workbook.

Lesson 6

Budgeting1

To introduce students to the idea of budgeting.

Teacher introduces the idea of budgeting, stressing in particular that a budget is done before the event happens and then students use the information provided about Kate's finances in Page 13 of the workbook to complete page 14 of the workbook.

Students then complete the questions on Page 15.

Budgeting 2

To enable students to use the information that they have already sourced in previous lessons about their income and expenditure patterns one year after commencing work.

Students complete their own budget on page 16 of the workbook, then the teacher discusses the results and discoveries of the students own budgets. Each students details will need to be kept confidential. It might be advised that teachers still pay particular attention to the last three lines of a budget sheet.

Lesson 8

Credit 1

To establish what credit is and the care that needs to be taken before one takes up an offer of credit and during the time one is using credit.

Students use the Internet to complete a worksheet based on a section of www.citibank.com. It is recommended that they save the address of the link given at the top of the worksheet in their Favorites for easy access in the future.

To continue to investigate the different concepts of credit.

The PowerPoint presentation on Credit is shown to reinforce the idea of credit, then students complete workbook pages 21 - 22 or Credit 2 based on an another section of www.citibank.com .

Lesson 10

Credit Cards

To show how a credit card works,the difference in it and a debit card, plus the dangers of overusing a credit card etc.

The PowerPoint presentation on Credit Cards is shown.

Lesson 11

Hire Purchase

To enable students to see what Hire Purchase is, how it differs from leasing and the conditions of a Hire Purchase agreement.

Students commence the class with credit card quiz, then they do workbook pages 23 -24 on Hire Purchase with the help of www.oasis.gov.ie and a search for Hire Purchase. Note www.oasis.gov.ie is being replaced by www.citizensinformation.ie

Lesson 12

Debt

To encourage students to see how easy it is to get into debt, the dangers of debt and solutions to overcome debt.

 

Students do the Hire Purchase quiz.

Lesson 13

Buying a house Part 1

To enable students to see what a mortgage is and to investigate the cost of buying a house and to enable them to see their dream house may just be a dream for some time.

Savings plus pensions

Investments

Having studied savings, students will discover in this lesson the concept of investing in shares or property, how this may or may not make a profit and the basics of how a limited company is run.

Lesson 19

Taxation

This lesson covers the purpose of taxation, the main types of taxes that are levied in Ireland at the moment and the circumstances that these taxes are collected.

Lesson 20

Effects of Taxation

Having studied the different types of taxes in the previous lesson, students will now discover the effect of an increase or decrease on the payee or on the country (economy) of an increase or decrease of the rates of these taxes.

Students first complete the Tax Quiz, followed by class discussion on the questions contained in workbook pages 32 - 33 or Effects of Taxation worksheet.

Insurance 1

Students are introduced to the concept of insurance, associated words, insurable and non insurable risks and the need for different types of insurance.

Students learn the Principles of Insurance.

Presentation preparation

To encourage students to reflect on their learning experiences in the module.

Students do the Insurance Quiz and begin to prepare a PowerPoint presentation on either the aspects of the module that appealed to them or a summary of what they have learned from the module.

Students complete their Power Point presentations

 

Students continue to prepare their PowerPoint presentations. Teachers should engage in conversation with the class either in a formal nature or one to one to encourage the main points of the module.and keep relating it back to where the student sees themselves ten years after commencing work or when older.

 

In addition to the above classes, teachers could invite speakers from a local bank, local insurance company, local credit union or their local Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) office to reinforce some of the ideas covered.

At the end of the module all the students or the best students could present their PowerPoint presentations at a small presentation ceremony and a prize offered for the best, most original etc.
